Local dose rate device

I’m going to implement a local dose rate device and would be interested in getting links to governmental web sites that publish local dose rates for your country.

The governmental web site for Germany is http://odlinfo.bfs.de/.

Will this be a bit like the weather plugin?

Today’s forecast is Rainy but with a touch of Uranium

On a serious note, I was trying to find one for the US but didn’t find anything yet!

Thats because das Germans always seem to be one step ahead of das Americans in terms of technology and engineering. lol. hahaha! lmao!!

Yes!!! and with this post I made Jr. Member status. Bonus!

Today's forecast is Rainy but with a touch of Uranium
;D The EPA is one of my tenants and I know the guy in the "AIR" department. If we cant find the online link for the USA I will ask him next week.

JOD.

@Ap15e

something like this?

http://energy.cr.usgs.gov/radon/DDS-9.html

http://www.radiationnetwork.com/RadiationNetwork.htm

you might as well draw a big circle around Nevada and Arizona. LOL

Thanks for the links. I’m looking for ‘live’ data.

The EDD (Equivalent Dose Device) plugin would:

[ul][li]display the current cosmical and terrestrial equivalent dose rate for a specific location (microSievert/h),[/li]
[li]display the government-defined threshold for the equivalent dose rate,[/li]
[li]fire a Luup event if the current equivalent dose rate exceeds the government-defined threshold,[/li]
[li]provide a Luup event for the equivalent dose rate,[/li]
[li]display the cumulative equivalent dose,[/li]
[li]provide a Luup event for the cumulative equivalent dose.[/li][/ul]

hmm… I tried to find live data on the net as well and I couldn’t find any actual live data that would be useful to poll data from.

I am just curious as to your thoughts and where you are headed with it, what kind of Luup event are you thinking of? An alarm type response or something else?

The only map i could find for the UK was for Radon UKradon - Introduction and even that isn’t live data. Will keep looking but don’t expect to find anything :frowning:

Thanks for all the links to radiation data sites.

DAD V0.11 has support for equivalent dose rates for 1800 German locations, see http://forum.micasaverde.com/index.php?topic=5466.0.

Wow, thats insane! You Rock, mann! We really need to find some Live data for the U.S. to give to Ap15e.

Update. Long story short. No map. The USA has programs wrapped up in programs wrapped up in program.

DEP/EPA does not monitor radiation, it’s handled by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission which is then overseen by the DEP/EPA ??? However, they dont have any clue about a live map so i’m contacting the USNRC directly so it might be a while before I post back, or never to be seen again…

Edit. Spoke to Becky @ the NRC, she is checking into it.

JOD.

say “Hi” to Becky for me, kidding of course
I just got a chuckle out of “Becky @ the Nuclear Regulatory Commission” and I don’t know why, I guess her name is too cute to be associated with Nuclear Energy.

at least we’ll know when you go missing, and we’ll go straight to Becky for answers

Hahaha…maybe your thinking of a cute Homer Simpson scenario?
I was very surprised at someone even answering the phone!! I should have started the conversation that I have a trunk full of spent fuel rods, where is the best place to dump them. The Feds would have been at my door quicker than Vera can turn on a light…

Yesterday I also contacted the CDC & Air Now but nobody knows of any live dose rate maps, and I don’t think Becky will be calling back so I’m giving up on this one. Sorry Ap15e, nothing for the USA except live AQI maps.

JOD.

As someone in the nuclear power industry, you probably won’t get much from the NRC. They may have live data at nuclear plants and such, which are not generally in highly populated areas. Even then, I’m fairly certain they don’t make that data available publicly.

The Dept. of Homeland Security have radiation detection capabilities in all the major cities, but again, they’re not going to give that to Joe Schmo off the street.

Lastly, why do you guys really care that much? If you’re worried about Japanese radiation, don’t be (as an American). Yes it’s a major event, but the media has been fear-mongering and providing blatantly wrong information since this all started.

Sites like NEI (http://nei.cachefly.net/newsandevents/information-on-the-japanese-earthquake-and-reactors-in-that-region/) and IAEA (Fukushima Nuclear Accident Update Log | IAEA) are providing real information without the sensationalism.

Agreed about the news and how their purpose is to scare you with sensationalism, then sell you something during commercial, then repeat.

The way I see it is that Home Automation and tinkering can become kind of an addiction for some. The fun is really in the pursuit of solutions. Having a fully automated home is great, but the fun kind of ends there with no more problems to solve or ideas to try. So that is why you see things like Dose Rate or Earthquake info making their way into Vera plug-ins, it is just because we (I use we loosely as its a select few with the true talent) can. And so we can brag to those with higher end systems and ask “Does your Crestron system report possible Asteroid collisions?, Nope?, well thats too bad, sorry for your loss.” If it is out there somebody will try to integrate it into Vera, at least until Vera has its own meltdown.

Thanks for the links.

@shady

Agreed!

I think if Ap15e and the few other talented ppl on this forum can make Vera do something that Homeseer and Crestron can’t do then thats super b@dass!

Can your Crestron system open the shades, unlock the doors, turn off your water valve, turn off major appliances, and turn on all the lights in the event of an Earthquake? No? oh, thats too bad. Vera can. lmao. Maybe its just the geek in me, but I think that would be really cool.

Lastly, why do you guys really care that much? If you're worried about Japanese radiation, don't be (as an American).

I’m astonished that live radiation data doesn’t seem to be publicly available. Even the German ODL (http://odlinfo.bfs.de/) doesn’t provide live data.

Sites like NEI (http://nei.cachefly.net/newsandevents/information-on-the-japanese-earthquake-and-reactors-in-that-region/) and IAEA (http://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/tsunamiupdate01.html?wwparam=1300226332) are providing real information without the sensationalism.

AFAIK, the only source of real information is Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) | HOME

I’m at awe that this information is not made publicly available as well. You would think that it would be made so. However, it’s probably because they don’t want to cause mass panic if something major occured.

on another note:
Does anyone know how to get to the directory on Vera 2 where the old DAD luup files are stored? I have root access via SSH, trying to find out how to get to the directory where the files are. I’d like to delete the old DAD files so that I can install this handy dandy nifty new one that Ap15e created.
Thank you so much!!!

-disregard, i’m just going to upload the new files. thank you Ap15e.

There are tsunami warning centers (http://ptwc.weather.gov/), hurricane warning centers (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/), …
