Anyone else have problems with the Kwikset lock? Mine won’t open any longer without the key and it beeps 8-9 times quickly every 30 seconds. I’ve read on the Internet that this means it’s got an electronic issue and will no longer work.
I have not had any issues with my deadbolt. But am curious to know what the solution will be if I encounter this same situation. You may want to give Black and Decker a call and see what they have to say.
You can try the barrel orientation reset again and then it’ll probably be OK again!
Remove the battery pack, press some buttons on the front to discharge the caps, then whilst holding the lock button on the PIN pad then reinsert the battery pack.
I tried the deadbolt orientation, new batteries, etc…It’s dead. I think the motor is fried in it or something…
Well, so much for this being my favorite lock…The Schlage deadbolt has performed flawlessly and I’m amazed the Kwickset died just after 6 months. Boo Hoo. I’ll call B+D and see what they say
Thanks, I’ve tried all of these things and still no luck. I called Kwikset this AM, explained that I was one of the initial beta testers with MCV and the customer support rep asked me some questions and he is shipping out a new lock, free of charge as a replacement. Sweet! Excellent customer service and they are including a shipping label for me to send the other one back to them for diagnosis.
Thanks for the help everyone with your suggestions…

I will be ordering my first Kwikset lock based on this. If the company is willing to stand behind it and just send out replacements…I’m in.
My thoughts exactly, excellent customer service and a company that stands behind their products with a good warranty always go a long way with me. Kudos Kwikset!
I realize this is a fairly old thread but since it pertains to Kwikset warranties, I thought I’d reply.
My Kwikset lever is not working properly, its a few months old, and worked OK for awhile but then starting having an issue where the lock would get physically stuck halfway when engaging or disengaging, whether using the keypad, MiOS or an actual key. With the actual key, you could lift the lever as you turned the lock to get it to work.
I took apart and re-assembled the lock to no avail, and messed with the set screws to no avail. I contacted Kwikset customer support and they are sending me a new external lever assembly, but they told me that since I purchased this through Amazon.com, an apparently unauthorized dealer, that I technically do not have a warranty at all.
I was pretty surprised to hear this since I had no indication that they had such a “rule” and that Amazon was not one of their authorized dealers. I appreciate that they are honoring the warranty anyway (hopefully the part fixes it otherwise I have a feeling they won’t do much more for me to help) but I’m not happy that the “lifetime” warranty had this in the fine print.
Has anyone else come across this issue? With Kwikset or other z-wave product manufacturers?
Re Plucente: This happened to me the other day. When I pulled everything apart, a small screw fell out. Finally figured out that it was from the back/door-side of the Exterior keypad. After putting it back in, AND tightening the other 5 screws, I reassembled everything; and the Kwikset SmartCode Touchpad Electronic Lever is again working just fine
I think what happened is that as the screws on the exterior pad loosened the pad itself was pushed away from the door; which put the shafts out of alignment just enough to prevent the motor from moving the lock all the way, but not so much that the key could still work.
Not a deadbolt but I just purchased a kwikset lever lock. It is a POS. The levers inside and external don’t spring back to their original position after opening the door. I checked the screws to make sure I didn’t over tighten anything. Also, the key cylinder doesn’t line up and I cant insert it. You can see the inside is twisted/bent. Just annoying.
Sounds to me you got a bad unit. I have had mine for a couple years now with no issue. It gets used constantly. I have one of the very first units. I was a beta tester for the lock.
I received a replacement today from Amazon and this was the same model number but different design. The cable was shorter and wrapped in a mesh and also labled. The key cylinder was already installed and looked to be a solid unit. This one installed like a champ. Just seems to lag behind when I send a LOCK/UNLOCK command. I haven’t run a heal yet, not sure if that will help. Any way, just wanted to update that the replacement was 1000% better.
My replacement was the same- the cable housing was better and the cylinder was pre-installed. I have had no issues since swapping the replacement lever in.
If your Smart Code lock is not working and is making repeated low noises it is most likely a poor connection of the black cable (not seated all the way.) This may happen if the door has been slammed. You only need to remove the cover and carefully remove 2 screws to fix this. When you remove the cover you will see two deep holes, the screws are recessed in those holes and hold the locking mechanism. These screws can become easily lost as they may drop out during the removal. Put a drop cloth down to prevent losing them. Once removed open the mechanism and ensure a solid cable connection. Place the remaining cable away from the spindle area. Reseat the bolt and put the screws back in. Place the cover back on and try it. And for heaven’s sake, stop slamming the door!
