kwikset lock

has anyone had any experience with the kwikset z-wave lock? If so, what do you think about it? Any problems installing it?

I just installed one yesterday and it was very easy. Just follow the directions. Initially you will only have 2 codes available, but once you add it to your Zwave network you can add about 30 more codes.

I have it setup to email me when someone enter a correct code. The email also includes the code name, so you know who entered the house.

I’m pretty happy with it so far.

I have a Kwikset deadbolt and a Schlage lever and love them both. I’ll be getting a Kwikset lever in a week or so and I expect that to work well, too.

Are you running them on Vera? Anyone running Kwikset on SchlageLink?

Of course, on Vera. I’ve long since left SchlageLink behind as an expensive and limiting solution.

I have a kwikset deadbolt that I installed a few weeks ago. So far it is working good. Some minor issues with UI4 that the Vera team are working on to get knocked out. I will also be receiving a Kwikset Lever lock sometime next week. The Kwikset lever lock will get some heavy testing and usage when installed. All in all, I am very happy with the Kwikset deadbolt. I like the fact that the deadbolt actually moves to lock and unlock the door.

I like the idea of these locks but from past experience with motorized deadbolts they have issues with battery life (only lasting about 2-3 months with heavy use) and have to have perfect alignment. My front door would change when the sun would hit it at the end of the day and would expand just a little and the lock wouldn’t open or close unless you pulled the handle just right. I had to file out the plate on the wall the dead bolt pin goes in to about an 1/8 inch to fix that problem. It seemed to work fine from inside when you manually open or close it. Just a little bit of drag would cause it not to work. Because it was not locking from the outside you would come home and realize it never locked. I hope the Kwikset gives some kind of warning when it doesn’t lock. Maybe a loud beep.
I had one on a storage closet in a garage and it was the same issue when it got cold.

If the bolt can’t complete its travel for some reason the lock itself gives a loud beep and the UI4 status message says “Bolt not fully extended”. Pretty cool.

The deadbolt has also been redesigned with a Taper and it should make a big improvement on bat life and alignment.

I’ve had mine installed for a few weeks now and it has worked very well. Still says 100% battery level.

My only issue so far is that the iVera app does not always show the correct lock/unlock status. In some cases, the app will show that it is unlocked when it is actually locked. This isn’t too big an issue for me because if I try to lock it, the kwikset will remain locked and the status in the iVera app will update to locked, so no unintentional unlocking yet.

The UI4 interface has shown the correct status everytime.

Very nice that they seem to have thought of everything to make it work properly. I think I’ll still wait. I’m trying to deside if I want to upgrade 3 schlage dead bolts with these or just get the handle type so it can have auto locking and long battery life for sure. I think the auto lock feature is a good idea on a vacation rental but if I could just remotly lock it when people forget to lock it upon checkout that would be nice.

I only had my Kwikset door lock for a few weeks now and it is working good so far. Time will tell on how the battery life will be. I was also concerned with the deadbolt not seating correctly with the door jam. Having the deadbolt being tapered is a huge help! I also filed down the cover plate that sits on top of the strike plate to make sure the dead bolt moves nice and smooth. So far I have not had an issue with the deadbolt moving into the locked position.

I agree that SchlageLink is expensive compared to Vera… my only issue, being a blackberry crack user, the interface with Schlagelink is 100% better vs, going through the Blackberry browser. If I can find a Blackberry App… I would be in heaven.

Can anyone provide step by step setup instructions for the kwickset lock?

What Software version are you using and which Vera version? You really need to be on UI4 for this work well, and also once you are, then you should just follow the wizard on how to set it up as it will differ slightly between Vera1 and Vera2.

I have Vera 2. I was able to pair, but when i log onto findvera to operate lock, it says lock needs to be configured. I dont know if I am using IU4. How do I find out?

If you are using findvera, you are running an older version. cp.mios.com is the new link for remote access. To update to ui4 go to http://micasaverde.com/vera2

My system identifies the lock, but I can’t set any codes because it says lock is not configured. I can’t lock or unlock remotely. Can someone help me out? Even when I press configure node, the message is can’t get any information on the node.

Go to zwave devices and then to repair. Run a repair on the zwave network. Sounds to me not everything was set on the lock e.g. Special associations etc.

Also the initial setup is really critical and according to Kwikset Vera and the lock need to be in real close proximity. If you have fitted the lock already then I would recommend excluding it then putting Vera on a chair next to the lock until its finished configuring.

@donzodoc, out of interest, did you follow the wizard when setting it up? The problem is that the documentation is very inadequate!
