Kwikset Lock status/trigger question

I already have a pretty large network of Leviton Z-wave switches, dimmers and scene controllers, but I’m coming to Vera from mControl so I’m not familiar with the Vera interface. The Vera should be here today, so I’m trying to prep for my new set up.

I also have a Kwikset Z-Wave deadbolt on order and wanted to find out about the way it reports its status. Does it send Vera different notifications/triggers when the lock is triggered from the outside or inside?

Basically, I want to set a lighting macro that turns on the lights when I unlock the door from the outside, but don’t want anything to happen when I unlock it from the inside. And vice versa, I want to set a macro that turn off the lights when it’s locked from the outside, but not locked from the inside.

Also does the Kwikset deadbolt know when the door is actually closed? In the off chance that some other macro triggers the deadbolt to lock while the door is open, I would like to put an if statement to prevent the deadbolt from extending and having someone accidentally slam the door with the bolt out. I guess a z-wave door/window sensor could prevent that, but it would be nice if the lock had it built in.

Does anyone have any experience with either of those questions?

Thanks,
Sean

PS - Also, if anyone has any cool lock automation ideas I’d love to hear your set up.

In your scene creation for locking and unlocking of the lock from the outside, you would use the trigger of “A pin code is entered” or “The lock button is pressed”. This will only trigger when the lock is operated from the outside.

As for knowing the status of the door being left opened, you will need a door sensor for this. There is no way of the lock knowing that the door is open.

Thanks, Garrett. Does vera receive a trigger when someone locks/unlocks the door by twisting the deadbolt or unlocking with a key or does the locked status simply change?

Are all of the possible triggers/statuses that the Kwikset produces listed somewhere?

Thanks again,
Sean

The triggers are posted in the scene creation of the UI under the triggers tab. Not sure of the are posted on the wiki. The lock will yell Vera when the lock is locked or unlocked via the keypad, lock button, manually locking/unlocking via the lock lever or when it is simply unlocked or locked via the key. There is a sensor inside the deadbolt and lever lock to know when it is locked or unlocked.

The triggers are listed in the UI as you mention, but the “pin code is entered” trigger just doesn’t seem to fire. I’m trying to do exactly what sean.scott is. namely turn a light on (and modify climate control) when a code is entered, but not when the door is unlocked manually (e.g. from the inside).

Every other trigger seems to work fine. “the door is locked/unlocked”, “pin code entered outside of valid date”, “code changed”, “lock button is pressed” etc.

To overcome the lack of “pin code is entered”, I tried using “door is unlocked” and turning off the polling interval to the lock–hoping that the lock wouldn’t volunteer a status change, but the vera unit still sometimes picks up on the door being unlocked manually as an “arriving home” event. I really don’t know if this is a shortcoming of the kwikset lock or some sort of miscommunication between the vera and the deadbolt.

Any ideas?

What are you putting in for the pin code? I believe it should become the index number. You can also use the * for all valid pin codes.

No indices work. I’ve tried 0, *, ‘’ (nothing), as well as specific numbers for existing pin codes (1, 2, 3, etc…). /var/log/cmh/LuaUPnP.log simply reflects status changes of the lock like:

06 10/11/12 23:10:41.377 Device_Variable::m_szValue_set device: 3 service: urn:micasaverde-com:serviceId:DoorLock1 variable: Status was: 1 now: 0 #hooks: 1 upnp: 0 v:0
xc57150/NONE duplicate:0 <0x2bdcd680>

The lock clearly knows it’s been unlocked because typing a pin code while using [“a door is locked or unlocked” → “Device is opened”] as a trigger does fire, but trying to use “a PIN code is entered” doesn’t.

Just in case anyone needs any more of these, I just received the two that I ordered from this seller on eBay;

Items came NIB and look great and an amazing price @ $95 seeing as how those usually go for $250.
