Kwikset Deadbolt

Does anyone know where I can get one of these? There is limited information online, but I read somewhere that they are available through control4 dealers. When I checked with our control4 dealer, they are telling me it only supports zigbee, although the kwikset site says they have established alliances with both zigbee and z-wave. Does anyone know if the deadbolt supports both protocols, or if they are selling one version that supports zigbee and another version that supports z-wave?

I’m also interested in a Kwikset branded z-wave device, though I am not ready to make the commitement.

Here is the official press release, http://www.kwikset.com/aboutkwikset/pressreleases/10-01-11/KWIKSET®_EXPANDS_HOME_CONNECT™_PRODUCT_LINE_AND_ANNOUNCES.aspx

Maybe try contacting one of those emails and posting your results?

I contacted them about two months ago. They said the z-wave version would be available this summer.

They are called Kwikset SmartCode Deadbolts and they are going for about $89

I ordered one and I should be getting it tomorrow.

I will also be ordering a Schlage LiNK soon.

The Kwikset Smartcode deadbolts with zwave are not available yet, the ones you see for sale there do not have zwave. They should be available within the next 6 months, hopefully.

Crap! I misunderstood. Its SmartCode WITH Home Connect. I’ll have to return it and wait for the actual release.

Thansk for letting me know!

Also be prepared to pay about 4 times what the standard Smartcode lock sells for. I don’t know how they can justify the cost difference, but it is what it is.

I was told at CES that the Baldwin version (higher end) of the lock will cost $1500 for the deadbolt and handleset. Right?!?!, like I’m going to spend more on my lock than I did on the entire system combined. I hope that sales rep was completely confused, as I do like the Baldwin offerings.

That is stupid expensive! They are selling to the wrong crowd if that is the case. If they want to pawn off a lock that cost more then $500 (even that is too much) then they need to sell to the Crestron group (millionaires). Z-Wave is suppose to be the “Affordable” solution.

You can spend that on a completely mechanical Baldwin Door handle lock combo. I have the handles on all my interior doors and they run about $60 - $75 ea.

Precisely why I bought the Schlage lock. The initial price for the Kwikset, will be somewhere around $350 for the deadbolt, and I think it is because the ZigBee version of the lock is at that price point. Basically I think you can blame the Control4 / Kwikset relationship for that price, I think they are basically charging what they think Control4 customers will spend and not pricing the lock based on the addition of Z-Wave or Zigbee to their existing SmartCode lock.

They’ll have to come down at some point to be closer to the Schalge lock’s price (around $200).

My parents have a ridiculously large control4 system… so I hope to get good pricing from their home automation dealer… they got the zigbee locks for $230… I’d pay that for a deadbolt that retracts vs $200 for one that doesn’t… and hopefully I can put the key-side of a standard dead-bolt on the outside of the smartcode deadbolt, and just trigger it off the code of the schlage lever-set below it…
Now, I just have to find someone who can match a schlage key to a kwikset lockset… hopefully it’s possible, but probably doubtful… and personally, I think the $200 that schlage is asking is too much too… I think $150 is more reasonable…
And, btw, I’m more impressed with vera-zwave than I am with the control4-zigbee support… having major zigbee problems at my parents’ house…

@ Woodsby, thanks for the insight into a Control4 system / ZigBee example. $200 for the Schlage is, of course, retail and you can find specials when you buy the lock with Vera, etc…this brings the Schlage cost down to around $130 which is more reasonable. I was sold on the motorized throw of the Kwikset lock, but becasue it was unavailable for over a year I caved and got the Schlage. I have to say though that while I didn’t like Schlage at first glance it has grown on me (not unlike the new Vera UI, lol). I hate battery powered devices, and the Shlage lock is a lot easier of batteries. I figured I’d buy the Kwikset (when it is available), stick it on the front door, and move the Schlage to the back door. I know people really want that motorized throw, but for those of us who can’t buy the Kwikset at the dealer cost, the Schlage is a great, “affordable” Z-Wave solution. I should also point out, if someone is consistently leaving their front door unlocked when they leave, then they have bigger problems than home automation can solve, lol. I realize the motorized throw holds more value for Rental Properties and Rural areas, while I live and work in a 15 minute radius (don’t get me wrong though, I love motorized gadgets like the rest).

I’ve thought of the moterized throw of a deadbolt vs the schlage disable the lever on the latch and I have to say while it sounds better, I think i prefer the lever options.

basically my thought is locks only keep the honest people out. If someone wants in my house bad enough that they are going to break in the latch then a deadbolt generally isn’t going to stop them anyway. The neighborhood where I grew up no one had dead bolts. I didn’t even learn about that till later in life. Owned my own home for 15 years and while i do lock the deadbolt at night when we’re home we generally just pull the door shut and let the latch do the locking. When I go on vacation maybe I take the time to pull the key out of my pocket and lock the deadbolt from the outside. (for honest disclosure i have a big dog- so he’s probably going to scare anyone off who starts fiddling anyway).

But the other bonus of the lever latch is you can leave it locked all the time and no one needs to remember to lock it on the way out. It just is locked. I have one of the lever latch schlages at my office and I like that I dont have to trust the cleaning serivce to lock up on their way out- it just is. And since there’s a keypad no one ever has to be concerned about locking their keys inside.

So there’s pro’s and cons to each.

In a perfect world there would be a lever latch with an auto throw deadbolt combo and you could have the best of both locks but just one keypad on the outside of the house.

anyone know the kwikset- how does that work with 2 numbers on one key? Is it really there are only 5 keys or do they make it some how that the “1” and the “2” are in fact different inputs? The ones at the lowes by me are set for 4 digits and they are set so you just press 1,2,3,4 to test them- but can you have more than 4 digit pins?

logically there are still plenty of combinations with only 5 keys but somehow it freaks me that there are half as many keys as the schlages 10.

my math is rusty but isn’t it 5^4 (625) combinations compared to 10^4 (10,000)?

it’s not like some crook is going to sit there and try all 625 but still 10,000 just seems stronger.

The schlage looks really big with all the keys- but honestly in my eye it’s not like i see the kwikset and thing “wow that is so much smaller than the schlage”

Kwikset supports 4-8 digit codes

Oh, how I wish there were lock combos like that with Z-Wave! I have one like that w/o Z-Wave and it’s convenient to have one key for the deadbolt and lever latch.

Too Bad it doesn’t support Z-Wave… at least not yet

ahh- 8 digits- that makes up for the only 5 numbers.

5^8 gets you 390,625 combos- even more secure than the 10^4.

When these locks are connected to Vera, can codes be programmed/controlled through Vera? I’m thinking it would be nice if going on holiday to be able to “lock-out” the codes.

Yes you can add or delete the codes remotely and set them to start and end on certain dates and times.
