I have a really old house which I’m trying to wire up, and I find that the Jasco 45609 is physically too big to fit in some of the old steel in-wall boxes around my house. Can anyone recommend a 2-way wall switch that isn’t so massive?
Yours is a common problem. The best solution is to replace the box with a deeper one, often plastic.
Some people are able to use an micro switch such as this with a standard switch. But, replacing the box is best.
Also, steel boxes block radio waves, this makes Z-Wave communication difficult to impossible.
Thanks for the reply.
Tearing holes in my walls to replace the boxes isn’t an option, so I will look into the micro switch product. Kind of surprising no one makes a smaller, full-featured switch.
I replaced my boxes without damaging the walls. I used a drill, chisel, and hammer to break the box up and removed it from the existing hole. I used an oscillating saw to cut the nails flush then I used a standard plastic old work box. It took some time but it wasn’t bad.
Z-wave devices don’t work well inside metal boxes.
Thanks guys.
Believe me when I tell you there is no way to get that particular box out of that particular wall without mass destruction. I’m giving up on that room for now.
FWIW, I do have a switch working fine in a metal box elsewhere in the house.
