Is there a way to automate heavy wooden shutters?

Hi MCV community,

Our house uses heavy wooden shutters (sometimes called plantation shutters) similar to the ones pictured here: https://jbrllc.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/img_4018.jpg

Does anyone know of any way to control these via zwave?

Thanks!

Are they motorized ?

Nope, just hand-powered

I was thinking of doing something like this: Motorized Plantation Shutters

but I wanted to check in if there was something more off the shelf or if anyone had any other suggestions.

Thanks!

Theoretically it should be possible as anything is. How many turns do you need to set them from full close to full open? just one? If so than a “servo” and a shutter z-wave module should do the think… http://www.ebay.com/itm/390708498593

This is just a rough sketch off what is necessary … Probably you need a stronger servo with more torque

I think your link is the best bet in price and performance. When I read you first post it was the link I was thinking of, then I saw you had already found it. There might be a few solutions on the market, but they are expensive and probably wouldn’t retrofit to your existing shutters (sold as new shutters). You can play around with where you place the servo maybe, but that method seems like the best option for you.

Good luck and keep us updated.

Where did you see the shutter module?
