INSTEON SETUP

Has anyone setup an INSTEON device, mainly, a Dimmer switch. Mine is 2876DB.
I have the new Vera2 and can figure out how to tell it to find my Insteon device.
Setting up the Insteon device for pairing is quite easy. (Hold Switch in up mode for 10 secs)
Also, do I need a PowerLinc to use those devices? (I don’t think so)
Any step by step would be appreciated.

Yes a PLM would be quite handy for this to work :wink:

Should I just get rid of my Insteon switches and get some Z-Wave switches instead then.
I’m not sure why the need for the PLM. I thought Vera2 would act as the accecss point for the Insteon as well.

Vera does not have an insteon controller. It will only control z-wave out of the box. You will need the plm to control any insteon devices.

Great, I now have it on order. Just to be clear, will I be plugging the PLM (PowerLinc Modem) into the USB port of Vera2 ? I would think so but justd want to be clear.

Using the latest beta 1.1.1182, I have successfully added an Insteon dual-Band 2457D2 LampLinc dimmer and a 2466DI ToggleLink V2 dimmer wall switch using a PLM2413U (newest dual-band PLM) connected to the Vera USB port. Two-way communication seems to be working well. You will need the newest firmware in order for this to work.

Got the PLM2413u and upgraded to version 1.1.1183.
Plugged the PLM in the wall and the USB into Vera2.
Then had to go to the wizard and enable insteon from there. I could not get it to work from the dashboard. My dimmers came up shortly after I entered their addresses in the wizard. And that works great. :smiley:

Now trying to add an insteon motion sensor. vera2 can see it but keeps saying “unable to get any information on node”
And idea why ?

@pamatte
How is it going with the installation of an Insteon device ?

I ended up breaking up with Vera as the Insteon support just isn’t ready.
The motion sensors are a must in my world.

@pamatte
So, based on your experience, would you say that it is either impossible, or at the best difficult, to interface with Insteon devices using Vera ?

Insteon is not ready on Vera yet. They started with zwave and are only supporting the dimmers so
far.
Isy, my new girl, on the other hand supports all Insteon devices but lacks in Z-wave and ip camera.
I guess I need one of each in the mean time.

@Pamatte

First congratulation for your new girl :wink:

Second, did someone at MCV confirmed that Insteon is not really supported at this time ?

Thanks

I don’t think it’s needed for them to confirm it. All I’ve every heard reported from conversations with them is something to the effect of “we’ll get it fixed next update.” Anyway, major issues as I understand them with Insteon at the moment are:

  1. Scene Controllers
  2. Motion Sensors
  3. Non-USB PLMs
  4. I’m sure there’s more, but I’m not aware of them.

Dimmers and switches seem to work fine with the latest beta and with the USB PLM. Outside of that, don’t expect much (or expect anything in the future it seems).

@mwbehr

It doesn’t smell good… :frowning:

I unfortunately had to divorce from Vera as well b/c of the lack of real insteon support. Vera does not support Insteon motion sensors at all. I’ve been following Vera to see if any future firmware upgrades will improve insteon support.
