Installing the CA5100, I have 2-circuit cables but the CA5100 has 1hot&1neutral!

Hey guys,

I’m super new to the micasaverde community and most the world of electrical installation. I know all the light switches in my house operate with 2 “hot wires.” When the switch is flipped, the 1 always hot wire connects to the other wire making it hot and both use one neutral as their “return” path from the light. This equals 240V with the 2 hot wires.

However, while looking at the CA5100 I got in the mail, I saw that there’s only one black “hot” wire coming out of it, one white neutral wire, and one green ground wire. How am I supposed to set this up?

The only 3 possibilities I can think of are:

  1. Connect the black wire on the CA5100 to the top black wire in my wall then the CA5100 white wire to the other black wire coming out of my wall

  2. Connect both black wires from the wall to the CA5100 black wire and then connect the CA5100 white wire (neutral?) to the neutral wire in the wall.

  3. Connect only one black wire from the wall to the CA511 black wire and then connect the CA5100 white wire to the neutral wire in the wall.

I’d appreciate some help on this since I’d like to not burn my house down. Here are some pictures below.

What country are you in ?

I think you have a 120V setup.
One of the two Black wires is Power (120v) … the other goes to your light.
I assume there is a white wire in the box … that’s the neutral.
If you have bare copper wires … or a metallic box … that’s ground (Green Wire)

I think the CA5100 is just a ZWave controller … This is NOT a switch.
It is used to send message to another Z-Wave swith or Vera!
So it will not be able to replace your existing switch.

The CA5100 is an Auxilary Switch, you need a CA600 dimmer or CA3000 on/off switch to go with it. I’m not sure if you will be able to find a CA3000 since intermatic doesn’t make this equipment anymore but you can get the CA600 on eBay, 6 of them for $99.
