Thanks! Just ordered one. Closest store to me with one was 100 miles away, but I will be by there on Wednesday and will pick it up in the store then.
Unfortunately the stock is not existent…
Just curious, are these interfacable with vera at all?
Not at this point and not with the default firmware
Both are back to original pricing, FYI…$99 and $169.
I just squeaked in yesterday and got another 3.5" at $49 even though the price had increased on me, they still had the older price tag on the shelf and I was able to get them to honor it. You might still have a chance today if you’re lucky.
I was a bit happier with the 3.5" for its alarm clock features and I seemed to have better luck in setting up my IP cameras to be viewed on it (still can’t get the Pan/Tilt/Zoom working though).
How do you find the touch screen on the 3.5? (I bought one to keep the 8" company ) I find mine very inaccurate and sometimes I cant select the correct letter on the keyboard when required!
I read that the 8" will be updated soon to bring its features a bit more inline with 3.5 which has a newer build and hopefully that means better alarm functions etc.
On the plus side the sound quality is pretty good considering how small it is; I’m mainly using it for Pandora and some of the other radio stuff.
I’m leaning towards the Nook color and rooting it. I have a droid now and love it, so want to throw Android on it so I can run HomeBuddy and Vera with the browser, and also use Pandora and IP Cam Viewer which is a kick ass Android IP cam app.
I never knew you could hack the Nook and make it a full android tablet…very cool stuff.
SmallNetBuilder.com has an article on it if you are interested.
So far I have been happy with my fat fingers and the 3.5" screen. I really liked the 8", but returned my original one at $169 only to try to put the money toward some kind of tablet. But then the sale hit and I realized the 3.5" fit my bedside a bit better and then I convinced the wife she needed one too. Once the 8" has all of the features in the 3.5" it will be superior. I could use the browser to control UI4 on the 8" screen, but I wouldn’t try that on the 3.5".
When I calibrate the touchscreen, I use a stylus to try to hit the mark as close as possible. Maybe that will help your problem of accuracy.
@myhomeserver keep us updated on rooting the nook, I have been trying to figure out which tablet I should grab.
The Infocast/Chumby’s use a resistive screen instead of a capacitive screen. Capacitive screens are what is normally on the newer cell phones or smart phones. Resistive is what is on the older PDA’s. Capacitive screens do not work well with a stylus, and resistive screens do not work well with fingers.
Try using a stylus or other pointy object (but not a sharp one, as it could scratch the screen). I would suggest going through the screen recalibration again with the stylus.
Some people have made it work using their fingernails.
You can find some info here on the root, I don’t own a nook but do have a few friends that have them and will convince one of them to go for it.

I’m waiting for NOOK color to be on sale for around $200 before I buy. Right now there are absolutely no discounts for it and paying full $250 is not easy…
there’s a whole crop of android tablets- and I have to assume piles more to show up at CES.
I’d wait just a couple weeks to see what comes of that before picking up anything android.
But the gist I get is that at the moment (pre-ces) the archos 101 @ ~$300 is out there on the the price per performance curve.
right now the problem is the market- and rooting stuff fixes some of that. SOME next generation ones should be sanctioned by google so the real market will be included and downloading homebuddy (or anything) will require almost no effort.
the magic question is what those things cost… and will there be any wifi only versions anytime soon…
The only problem is that “proper” tablets with Android 3.0 Honeycomb will require dual-core CPUs and will cost >$600 - take a look at the first attempt of iPad-killer from last year, Samsung Galaxy Tab, which costs north of $600, even though it’s 7", single-core, runs Android 2.2…
All the cheap no-name tablets of last year have many shortcomings - slow CPU or poor/resistive screen are quite common. Surprisingly, NOOK color has pretty good CPU and very nice screen and priced at $250, because it’s not marketed as a tablet, but as a eBook Reader, to compete with Amazon Kindle (<$150) and Sony eReader… So, rooting it makes it a full-fledged tablet (almost, as there is no microphone and other limitations), comparable to others for $500.
