How to Securely Setup Remote Viewing of IP Cameras

Hey gang,
I have two Foscam 9xxx series PTZ cameras and a NetGear router. My question is simple: how can I securely setup port fwd to allow remote viewing? It’s working fine; I just want to harden the cfg. Using Vera alone to view realtime video is very choppy and refreshes every 5-7 seconds so it’s not ideal.

I’ve setup Dynamic DNS with netgear’s website since I don’t have a static IP at home, and use that URL for remote access.
I changed each camera’s admin ID/PW from defaults, obviously.
I’m using a random port for each camera.

Anything else?
How can I set it to be SSL based?

And is there any particularly good iOS viewing app? I’m currently using Foscam’s free viewer app but don’t mind buying something.

Thanks!

Does your router support VPN? If so use/configure that.
Secure and simple, you only need one or two ports open to connect to your home when you are enroute and then you (can) have access to your whole LAN.
Easy does it ;D

yep i 2nd that.
i blocked all my cameras from having internet access and then i setup a VPN.
when i want to view them, I VPN in.

Thanks. Apparently, my NetGear doesn’t support VPN sessions, but I’ll look into it more.

I dont use it myself but I hear possitive feedback about DD-WRT and Tomato firmwares that can be flashed over/into an existing router to give it more features like VPN.
You might be lucky with your Netgear.
PS only go for it if the image for your router supports OpenVPN, dont waste time on PPTP based VPN its not that secure anymore.

Cheers

Anyone know how to get the Cisco RV180 VPN working? lol. PM me!

We had one at my former employer…
I know that it has its own particulair Cisco Programing /Config (all console based, non GUI).
When changes needed to we made we “hired a guy”.
I think it was max 2 hours of work (for the dude) to configure it all
