I just register an account to ask a few questions about Z-wave door lock, such as how safe is it as I heard a lot of news about someone can attack to z-wave signals and open the door. Does the news right ?
Sure its possible - in a movie.
The zwave communication from the lock to Vera is encrypted. Any encryption can be broken with enough time. And going at it by trying to access your Vera, would depend on how secure your home network is.
But lets face it: To do the above is way beyond the capability of most, if not all, burglars. If someone wants in, they are simply going to bust a window or the door itself, rather than bothering trying to hack into your lock. Much easier. (And most of the guys that can do the hacking above do not live anywhere near me.)
I would not use a zwave lock if I was trying to protect military secrets, though.
To reiterate what was said above (and I speak from personal experience), anyone who wants to break into your home won’t waste their time figuring out how to unlock the door by hacking your Vera or your Z-Wave network. It is much easier and faster (takes just a few seconds) for a thief to use brute force to break down the door lock or to enter through a broken window.
So perhaps I should just leave the door unlocked anyway. Saves damage to the door and windows if they want to get in. In my opinion anyone who wants to get in will anyway.
ps. Just before the thieves turn up here. I DO actually lock my doors.
The Z-Wave network is hard to hack into, and locks in particular have some special additional z-wave protocols that protect them. The Vera itself is more likely to be hacked than the z-wave network directly.
As far as z-wave available locks. Only Schlage to my knowlede offers a Grade 1 ANSI z-wave dead bolt. All the rest are Grade 2 and some of the Schlage and Grade 2 as well.
