Can the honeywell lyric security system be used with Vera in any kind of way? The lyric ss. Use 5800series sensors that has zwave built into them. I’m looking to get a home security system, but want to have home automation…
Please help me out thanks
We recommend Vera and DSC all the time. They work well together as both a top notch security system and a automation and control platform.
The lyric supports the six series sensors for two way communication and the 5800 series sensors for one way communication. For wireless security systems two way communication is important so that a wireless jammers will set off the security system. The honeywell lyric is good system for residential users, you will need to pay for monitoring in order to use the system and have access to Total Connect. (Total Connect 2.0)
Lyric Pros
- The six Two-way Wireless Technology is top knock, long range and strong wireless signal
- The six series devices/sensors communicate using an encrypted connection to the controller so you don’t have to worry as much about them being spoofed. The six series devices/sensors also has a MAC address and if the controller picks up multiple MAC address it sets the alarm system off.
- If a six series devices/sensors drops off the network the monitoring company is alerted so you don’t have to worry about kids and wireless jammers
- If the controller stops communicating with the monitoring company the monitoring company is alerted so you don’t have to worry about people breaking in and smashing the controller before the alarm goes off (A big problem a lot systems have.)
- It supports both z-wave and secure z-wave
- The Lyric is simple to use and simple to setup.
- Honeywell is always updating the lyric firmware to add new and features and improving the product
- The technical support from Honeywell to their installers is one of the highest in the industry which translate to the end user having less problems.
- If you google or look the lyric up on YouTube you will find a lot of information out there on how to do things yourself compared to other systems.
Lyric Cons
- Honeywell has plans to support multiple partition for the lyric but it only currently supports one partition. You can setup the equivalent to partition using alarm states but you won?t meet specs for secure document storage or for a secure file room. Also when dealing with insurance companies they only legally define partitions, if doesn’t say partition then it’s not a partition. Multiple partition are important if you have a gun cabinet/room, hot tube or swimming pool or safe and you need to keep these areas armed when there not in use in order to receive insurance reductions. If you have a secure document storage or a secure file room in your house you will not met the spec if you do not have these areas on their own partition in your security controller.
- The home automation and z-wave options are very basic and limited as it’s really meant to be used to make the security system better. Example: You walk in the door the and z-wave light turns on, your outside motion sensor goes off and the closes z-wave light turns on.
- The Lyric controller is extremely quick for sending out z-wave commands but it only supports polling for updating the status of z-wave devices and is e-x-t-r-e-m-e-l-y slow when updated the status of z-wave devices.
You can add the honeywell lyric as secondary/slave controller to the vera. I have not done so myself yet and I’m not sure lyric will pass security device data to the Vera. If I had to pair honeywell lyric with a vera controller I think it would work best with a verasecure as they will have the most protocols in common.
The honeywell lyric controller is a good wireless security controller and has been getting better and better every year since its release.
