I am having problems pairing a new Sclage deadbolt lock. I have one in my vacation house and it was easy to pair but this one is giving me problems.
Currently the Vera is located 6-12 inches from the door lock. I don’t know how much closer I can get it without gluing it to the door.
I have reset the Schlage door lock. (by removing the battery pressing the schage button, replacing the battery and pressing/hold the schlage button after the light turns green)
So this is what I get.
I tell Vera to Include one node of they any with High Power and timeout after 30s
At the door lock I code in the program code. (light flashes orange). Wait till light stays Orange, Push the Schlage button. Then Push the 0 button. The schlage light starts flashing orange. I see messages see the node has been detected. The schlage light green flashes for about 1 minute, then turns Red, and then off.
Error message in vera window “Cannot get security scheme”, the vera goes ahead and creates the device.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Could this be a defective lock or a defective Vera?
Same problem. My schlage lock paired OK with previous firmware, same Vera2. Now it won’t pair with the new firmware.
Are you running the latest beta firmware?
You say Vera is 6-12 inches from the door lock? Best results for proper pairing have been with the lock 2-3 feet from Vera and with Vera plugged into the Ethernet, not on the battery dongle. Taking the lock to Vera may be your next move unless that is what your are describing. Some have also reported that the locksets can be ‘too close’ to Vera so try to keep within several feet. I had fits getting the lock to properly configure until I took it out of the door and paired it on the desk, allowed all of the security protocols to link, bench test for lock/unlock & codes, etc… then re-installing the lock in the door.
Unfortunately, pairing locks has always been a challenge due to the complexities involved.
Because the pairing process exchanges encrypted keys and things like that, the process takes longer, and is more succeptable to failure. This is not a “Vera thing”, but a “Z-wave thing”. Nature of the beast, I suppose.
I feel your pain. I have 6 locks installed in my home, and I have never had an ‘easy’ pairing experience. Consider yourself lucky. I already owned my first lock before buying Vera. When MCV announced that they were adding lock support, I ordered my Vera. It was a bumpy road way back then, trying to get it to work properly.
I just got a new Vera2 last week and I’ve been having a blast getting everything connected. As soon as I got it, I updated it to 1.1.1183.
I just completed my Schlage deadbolt pairing last night but I had some issues before I finally got it to work. (did I mention I had to redrill a 2 1/8 " hole!?)
Well, I had the same problems that you did when I tried to pair them using the battery pack remotely. I got “Cannot get security scheme”.
So, this is what I did, and it worked the first time.
Unpair the lock from Vera2.
reset lock to factory settings (this is what i think really helped)
boot up vera, logged in to web portal using http://192.168.81.1
press zwave button once
enter program code on lock - wait for orange
press schlage button, then 0
Then I saw vera detect and then pair the device with no issue at all. It took about 20 seconds…Much quicker than I thought.
press zwave once more to save
then done!
Good luck, I’m sure you’ll get it working!
(BTW - Vera was sitting on the floor next to the door with the lock during pairing)

Make sure you remove the lock a couple of times from vera (hold down z-wave button for 5 seconds and it will blink fast) put in programming code, schlage, 0. Do that several times and then add it. If that doesn’t work, reset the lock per the schlage directions and then remove it from vera a couple more times and then try to re-add it. It should work off battery, I have reprogrammed many of these from battery. Make sure you keep vera near the lock for a couple minutes while it finishes pairing. Do not turn off the battery, keep it on battery and plug in the ethernet and make sure the lock gets set up before you reboot vera and switch to wall power.

Eddie -
Remember 6-12 inches from the door is probably too close. 2-3 feet would probably be better.

I’m having the same problem with a couple Schlage lever locks, since upgrading from 1047 to 1183. Locks are recognized as “new nodes”, AND as door locks, but no green light from the locks and Vera fails to get security scheme, etc. I’ve tried including locks at full power with 120 second wait time, as suggested in a wiki. I’ve tried taking the locks off the doors so they could be within 1 meter from Vera. Tried closer and farther away. Tried excluding locks/resetting to factory/including locks several times, all with same negative results. Put in a trouble ticket, and the techs are working on this. FYI, I was able to pair several dimmers, on/off switches, Trane t-stats, a ZIR000 motion detector, and an Aeon Labs door/window sensor with no problem. When I tried to pair the 2 Schlage locks and an ACT ZRF113 relay…NO GO. Like hitting a brick wall. I for one am baffled.
So, I tried all of the recommendations from the above. Reset, move it 3 ft. Without any success. So my local Radio Shack had one more Schlage lock. So I tried to pair it right out of the box, and got the same damn thing. The problem is with my VERA.
I’m having the same issue with my deadbolt. Upgraded to 1183 yesterday and reset my network (because Vera still failed to enter learn mode). I’ve gotten all nodes re-added except for the deadbolt. Tried everything suggested here and on other threads with no luck. Sounds like a firmware issue.
So I down graded to 1043 and now I can pair to my Schlage lock. So this is definitely a 1183 issue. Worked FIRST time on 1043. This was very frustrating. I understand 1183 is beta, but so is 1043.
New to this. How do I downgrade to get the locks working. I can’t find a link to the firmware. Can someone provide me one. I just got vera 2 weeks ago and upgraded to the beta 1183 right away. The locks, both a deadbolt and lever won’t pair. They are recognized, but they fail at getting secure classes. Other than that everything is perfect. I’m hoping I can reset, downgrade, install locks, upgrade and finally install the rest of my network.
If they are recognized but fail at getting the secure class, you do not need to downgrade to get them to work. Because of Schlage security, you need to have the lock in the same room as Vera for initial paring. Best success is with Vera plugged in (not on battery) and connected to your wired ethernet. Paring Vera with the lock within 2-3 feet (not closer) has worked for others. If the lock is installed across your network with other nodes between Vera and the lock, the security class data won’t be reliably transferred or not transferred at all.
