Help me understand this...

I bought the Vera to save my sanity, as the individuals in my house don’t know how to turn off a light switch. I now have it working where the switches automatically turn off. I’m now looking to expand the functionality of this nifty little Vera device.

My next thought was directed towards home security. I had two basic thoughts:

  1. Event: Motion Detected. Action: Record until motion ceases.
  2. Event: Front door opens. Action: Record for the next 30 seconds.
I then wanted to store these video recordings on my own local drive for later review.

From reading the posts on here, I’m getting the impression that Vera cannot handle video cameras (even though the app shows the option). Is that correct?
Will I have to use a NVR application, such as iSpy or BlueIris to make this work… and if so, how do I handle the “front door opens” type events?

Any guidance here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
DG

YES BlueIris is ideal. You can trigger record commands via http with blueiris, but I would just use the built in motion.

I have a front porch camera facing the front door.
Not sure what your trying to get, but recording only after the door opens doesn’t help me much. I want a recording when someone walks up to the door, weather they knock and leave, drop the mail, steal the mail (yes I had packages taken from my porch after USPS dropped them when I wasn’t home), ring the door bell, start picking the lock or what ever. After they open the door is a bit late for me.

But lets say you did only want when the door is opened. You can black out or only highlight movement on one upper section of the door so if the door moves it will trigger the motion and set it off.

Either way I personally wouldn’t play with the Http commands to trigger recording. I would just use the built in motion, which I do now. You can also use BlueIris geofence to only trigger this recording when your not home or certain hours. Really there is a ton of options if you want to use them.

Thank you for the response.
So just to clarify, it is possible to integrate Vera with BlueIris through the use of HTTP commands. However, it is a pain in the rear to do so. And, I’d be better off sticking to the motion detection inherent in BlueIris to perform all of my video recordings. Do I understand that correctly?

And if so, it would seem that I’d be better served having two separate systems. Home Security and Home Automation.

@Demonsguile, see this thread, it will give you an idea of what is possible.

Yes.
Separate systems is better. I currently do have the camera’s displaying in vera but I don’t use them there. My wife uses Authomation and can view them if she wants. I use blueiris app for watching the camera then switch to Authomation for the house.
It’s faster, smoother, better resolution and no delay when watching them on blueiris vs. threw vera. Also you can view the previous recordings and much more on BI but not on Vera.
For the most part separate systems but you can still view in vera if you want.
And http:// might me easy for u but it’s still limited. It’s not like there is a plugin!
