Hello, my name is Ethan and i'm an automation addict

Just wanted to quickly introduce myself and kind of get a feel for what everyone else is going to automate and how.

Things I would like to control (IR);

  • HTPC
  • Cable box
  • Projector
  • Stereo
  • Outside stereo, maybe an ipod input or connect to the home’s htpc or shared drive.

Things I would like to turn on/off and monitor;

  • Indoor lights
  • Outdoor lights
  • Garage door
  • Dock lights
  • Xmas lights in the winter

Things I would like to just monitor;

  • Well pump (electric motor, 220v)
  • Outside temperature
  • Aeration system for beach area (electric motor, 220v)
  • Water fountain pump (electric motor, 220v)
  • Irrigation pump (electric motor, 220v)
  • Smoke alarms
  • Door bell
  • Stove/oven (I currently do not have kids but I know when I do, they’ll try and burn my house down…)

Other automation I would like;

  • Schlage LiNK door locks (House and garage)
  • Thermostat controls
  • Motion sensors that might trigger events such as lights or door locks.
  • Cameras

I’ll be using my iPod touch and my Palm Pre. I would like some events to have a message sent to my phone. Example, if the door bell rings I would like a txt msg letting me know so I can pull up and view the front door camera and see who it is.

Also, where is everyone buying their z wave switches and devices? Any good deals out there?

Thanks again to everyone and I can’t wait to get started!

Welcome to the Journey - this has been a good place to get information. It looks like you have put a little thought into what you want to do - that’s great ;D

You now know what you want to do - now the fun starts in figuring out the best way to accomplish the tasks you have so far - what I have come to understand for me is the farther I go down the road the more I am able to do that I didn’t realize when I started this journey.

Again welcome to the board - another place to look that deals in the Z-Wave Technology is Z-Wave World: http://zwaveworld.com/forum/index.php? you might want to check that out also

I bought my Z-wave stuff and my Vera at ASI Home in PA… Close enough to my home that I could drive there if I absolutely needed to,… Decent turn around time for the items in stock… decent pricing… but they have frequent back orders and incomplete shipping & I did get a bad HA14 dimmer from them, and have to negotiate a return… But if you call (normal M-F Bus. hours only), you actually get to speak to a human being…
