I read this thread and will look into Growl for Android: http://forum.micasaverde.com/index.php?topic=6882.0
…Has anyone considered Growl notifications to a PC running Growl for Windows?
It’s been talked about here. The upshot was that Windows Growl (and Mac App Store Growl) uses a different protocol that require cryptographic signatures, pushing it beyond “simple” to code.
Newbie Q:
How would you envision this working? Growl triggers TO vera? Or Vera triggers to Growl?
I use Prowl for iPhone to receive notifications. It would also be nice to receive these notifications on my PCs.
Sorry to hear about the complexity with Growl. E-Mails and SMS get delivered through a server that may crash. A notification bypasses the server in the middle. WIth e-mails, I still have to poll the mailbox. It’s not easy to get an SMS to get delivered to a PC.
I would prefer a true notification (Vera sends a message to the PC) versus polling (PC constantly polls vera say every 90 seconds).
Intrepid,
I would have imagined that Vera could receive a GNTP message and in turn create a Growl trigger. That trigger could drive various scenes. So for example, a Severe Weather Alert could be received by growl and cause the storm shutters to be lowered on a house.
On the other hand, I would have expected that Vera could send out a GNTP message as part of luup code called in a scene. So for example, a motion detector is set off from an armed sensor. The event could turn on various lights, but also send a Growl to an Android Phone, iphones or msphones, a Logitech Revue or other smart TVs.

I just stumbled upon Prowl/Growl application/service. I can’t claim to fully understand how everything ties together. Right now I use it to debug LUUP code by spewing out variable content to the the service. I retrieve the messages from the Prowl client on my iPad.
This has worked well. The response is fast, usually I have the content in under 3-5 seconds. I can liberally sprinkle the code with Growl triggers to see values. The documentation says it is limited to 1,000 “messages” per hour. That’s a bit nicer than the limitation of 20 messages per day from Vera emails. Are Vera emails still limited to 20 per day?
I see several forum entries stating Vera’s email processing service is down… This might be a bit more reliable.
