Greetings experts and fellow enthusiasts! I am looking for guidance in fine tuning my Vera Edge System running 1.7.2414. I currently have a GE 12722 Switch running in a 3-way circuit that turns my exterior lights on and off.
I would like to install an additional GE 12722 Switch in another area of the house where wiring for that circuit does not currently exist (so just powered up and connected to the other circuit via the z-wave controller so that I can turn the same circuit on and off from multiple locations.
My goal would be to have the Vera Edge Controller recognize (associate) both of the GE 12722 devices as one switch and only see it as one device in my list of devices.
I found generic procedures for creating associations in the controller but I believe I am missing a step or the devices are not capable.
After scouring The forum and every GE/Jasco document and site I have not been able to locate this information. Can anyone assist or point me in the right direction?
The Jasco devices do not support associations. Therefore, a 12722 cannot control any other Z-Wave device. To use associations, you’ll need to use Leviton or Cooper switches.
You could fake the association and get something working that is close to what you want, although there may be a (significant) delay between when you activate one switch and the other reacts.
You could achieve this with a couple of scenes where one switch triggers a scene that turns on the other switch. You could also do this using the Program Logic Event Generator(PLEG) plugin. Finally, you could use a virtual switch plugin where the virtual switch controls both 12722 at the same time.
I’d start with a scene and see how it works. Then, if the delay isn’t to objectionable I’d think about replacing the scenes with PLEG.
The GE/Jasco switches also do not support Instant Notification. HOWEVER… If the switch is able to communicate directly with the Vera controller, it WILL send a notification packet and the Vera will understand that the state of the switch has changed (on->off, off->on).
You can use state change of a switch to accomplish exactly the same thing as associations as follows:
Create a scene that is triggered by EITHER of the two switches turning on (this is done simply by setting both switches as a trigger when turning on - the logic for scene triggers is “OR”). The action of the scene is to turn both switches on.
Create a second scene exactly the same as the previous except use OFF for the triggers and the action.
For the record, I use a Jasco switch at the door to the back yard as a singular control to turn on two other circuits and it works fine with a brief delay (under 1 second, usually).
Leviton switches will do exactly the same thing for you using Instant Notification and you do NOT need to create associations.
