FS20Z-1 or LFM20 Relay to Open Genie Garage Door

Hello Verites!

I’ve been happily using my Vera lite to automate my home, however just recently I have had an issue with the linear FS20Z-1 relay switch that I use to open and close my garage door remotely. Does anyone know if these things burn out over time and need to be replaced?

Here is the situation. I used the FS20Z-1 to open and close my garage door for 2 years now. Recently, when it won’t respond to the z wave commands. So I got a ladder out and opened up the garage door opener and found the relay. There is a steady green light. When I push the button (looks like a slit), nothing happens. I know that, that used to make the door open and close, as well as to sync it with my Vera lite.

So, do you think the relay is bad? I’m happy to buy a new one, but wanted to check with you all to see if there is some known issue beforehand.

Also, coincidentally, I bought my wife a new car and had to fiddle with the learn button on the garage door opener and ever since then it doesn’t work. Neither does the exterior wall mounted genie number pad.

Thank you for any advise/suggestions.

If not, then the issue is probably not with your Linear relay.

All things burn out overtime and need to be replaced. It is entirely possible that the relay is bad. However, I would expect this relay to last much longer than two years.

Assuming that the garage door opener is indeed working correctly and that the issue is only the Linear relay, then I would try a few things before replacing the relay.

  1. Verify the wiring is still properly connected. You describe the relay being inside the garage door opener. There is lots of vibration there and it is possible that a wire came loose or broke.

  2. Power cycle the relay form the circuit breaker.

  3. Exclude and re-include the relay and see if it starts working again.

Thank you Z-Waver for your reply.

The wired door mounted button works as does the Homelink car buttons. The exterior wall mounted battery operated genie number pad does not work, nor does the linear relay. Again, not sure if this is a coincidence or not.

I opened up the garage door motor to see what the status of the relay was. The relay had a solid green light that looked like it was flickering a little but very rapidly like it was on steadily. I hit the slit button on the relay and nothing responded, whereas that used to make the door open. Before unplugging the garage motor to cut power I started to inspect the wiring and something shorted and tripped the breaker. I wish I had tried what you suggested and tried to cut power and reboot / resync it prior to blowing up the motor.

The motor is now fried or the PCB controller boards are. Anyway, there is a short and this is beyond my electrical knowledge. Obviously because I damaged my door opener. (Good new is that is was 14 years old and noisy) Bad news is I am out $209.

My wife wanted me to get the garage door working again, so I went out to Lowe’s and replaced the ceiling mounted unit with a new quiet belt motor instead of a screw driven system. I would like to get the unit associated with the Vera system again to run scenes, etc. But not sure what my best course of action is. I see that recently there is a Z-Wave controller GD00Z-4 Z-Wave Garage Door for $85 that is wired to act as a garage door button. Has anyone used this?

The new Gennie garage door opener I purchased is the Genie Model #: 7055-TKALV which works with IRIS. (I came to find out it is not Z-Wave, but Wifi, and the IRIS system talks to a web interface that sends a signal over the Wifi to make it work) It is called the Aladdin wifi system. So can I hack it to work? I’d like to if possible because it came with the garage door opener.

I think I saw that there is a MYQ plugin for Vera. The MyQ solution is $49 a Lowe’s. Anyone use this?

Thank you everyone for your support. The Garage door was hopefully my first and only casualty in my quest to make my home fully automated and cool.

I am going to do research and see if there is a plugin that will run this. Any advise?

I have no experience with this particular garage door opener. Based on what I’m reading, I think:

The Aladdin WiFi connectivity is yet another cloud based solution. I’m not aware of any Vera Plugins for it and I doubt that the MyQ plugin is compatible with it.

The MyQ Internet gateway is intended for use with MyQ garage door openers, from Chaimberlain(LiftMaster, Craftsman). I don’t think it works with Genie door openers.

The Iris controller is the same as the GoControl/Linear GD00Z-4 Z-Wave Garage Door Opener This controller works on the same momentary relay principle as your FS20Z-1 did, with the added benefit of a warning light and buzzer that is required for new Underwriters Lab compliance(UL325). These devices should work fine with your new opener.

The Linear GD00Z-4 will work with any garage door opener that can be triggered with a simple momentary contact pushbutton switch. Many garage openers will work in that manner, but not all. The exceptions are those that require a proprietary wall-mounted wired control and thus can’t work with a simple pushbutton. Linear publishes a list of garage door openers known to not work with the GD00Z product at http://www.nortekcontrol.com/info/Linear-GD00Z-Product-Compatibility-Notice.pdf

Thanks for everyone’s responses.

I ended up installing the Genie Model #: 7055-TKALV and it is a pretty quiet and reliable garage door opener so far. Unfortunately I opened the Aladdin components that came with it and installed the sensor to the garage door prior to realizing that I could have sold that system on ebay for ~ $75.00 and then turn around and buy the GD00Z-4 on Amazon! So now I am stuck with the cloud based solution rather than the Vera solution I was hoping for, unless I want to have both installed.

Does anyone know if I can simply buy the Iris version of GD00Z-4 at Lowe’s?

Anyway, thanks again! Take care.

Yes. It is identical.
