Foscam FI9821W - Support & How-To

Anyone seeing VeraEdge having trouble remembering the custom port number?
I have my Foscam set to use custom port. After setting the custom port number, it works fine. But after a while (probably a day), the port number setting get lost and VeraEdge can’t connect to the camera.

Make sure you do not have the Mac address field populated. If you do, vera will try and update the ip address if it thinks it changed and you’ll lose the port.

hmm… Kind of make sense but not sure why would Vera think the IP changed because I assign specified ip to my Foscam in the DHCP service setting on my router. And the DHCP lease is several days. So the renewal event should not be triggered every day.

Anyway, I have removed the MAC address of the Foscam from my VeraEdge. Consider it resolved if I didn’t report futher problems

Thanks!

Thanks guys for all the details… with OP, I managed to configure Foscam FI9821P V2 under my VeraLite (Version:3.20 L:1 - Firmware Version 1.7.481) and able to see the image/video… However, I couldn’t see the controls for pan/tilt for some time until I added impl_file - I_Foscam98HD.xml.

After adding impl_file - I_Foscam98HD.xml, I could see the arrows for pan/tilt but nothing happens when I click them, for sure am missing something. If my understanding is correct, the only difference between the models 9821W & P is the QR code underneath the camera for easy remote viewing…

Please let me know what I could be possibly missing…

Also, I want to know whether its possible to pan the camera to certain angle based on different device’s trigger… Here is what I thought I would be able to do once I configure an IP Camera under Vera…

  1. Mount the camera facing main door by default…
  2. Start recording 2-3 mnts when main door sensor is armed and opened.
  3. Pan the camera towards left (say 45deg) when my Deck sensor is armed and opened.
  4. Start recording few mnts…then go back to default pos (I can manage it through delay).

Final question… is there a way to reduce the delay? it refreshes every 7-8 seconds currently…

Thanks in advance for you answers… let me know if any further info is required to answer these…

It worked!!!

After struggling with it, I finally found this thread and with the help of Aaron post and flam5 post, I did it! So happy here. ;D

Thanks, guys.

I am just a noobie in this home automation and, although I have already bought A LOT of things, I am starting to make things work together now, one by one. I am in the beginning yet, just trying to get things recognized by my vera lite. Then, and only then, I will try automation itself.

I have the new Foscam FI9803P and it is connected to my VeraEdge with UI7. It works fine as a camera. Regardless of the reliability, I want the sensor to work like my SD Foscams… Is there a way to do this? I can’t figure it out and it is very frustrating.

I’m not even integrating my foscams with my Vera. I’ll just go into my blue iris app and watch from there using the cameras built in motion detector video captures.

Blue Iris is ok (and I have it) but I don’t want to run a server 24/7 for it.

I’m running an old laptop running XP. It’s either that or a DVR.

Great post with tons of helpful info!

I’ve got a Foscam 9831 camera that’s working fine in Vera - pics, live video & PTZ. I have setup alerts so the cam will take a pic when the front door is opened and that works well.

What I can’t get working is for the cam to take a video clip (10 or 20 seconds). I opened a case with Vera tech support and after a week, they ultimately said they couldn’t provide a solution, and suggested I try this forum!

I suspect it has something to do with the CGI URL setup because it is set for snapicture only as shown below.
/cgi-bin/CGIProxy.fcgi?cmd=snapPicture2&usr=&pwd=
The Foscam website has another URL that has MPG stream variables instead of snapPicture but I don’t know how to integrate that URL and its variables. I also called Foscam but they couldn’t help and deferred me back to Vera.

Has anyone gotten the video record function working in Vera? If so, can you share your configuration please?

I use Synology for my security recording. So when the zwave motion triggers I send a command to that system to start recording. I suspect you may be able to do the same with Vera but I don’t know how to guide you there.

How does Vera talk to your Synology?

I also use Synology but I have it set to record all the time and overwrite video after 2 weeks. Since I can’t get Vera to record video when my door is unlocked, I just have it send me pics and if I need to check the video, I can go back to my Synology recordings. In my case, my Vera doesn’t talk to Synology; not sure there’s any reason for it to do so unless you don’t have enough disk space to record all the time.

Thanks for the helpful post. Not sure if this thread is still watched. I got the FI9821W v2.1 set up. It seems to work ok with a couple of problems.

  1. Taking a snapshot from within Vera, then going to “Recorded”, thumbnails of the snap show, but when trying to view the large version, it just shows the event number and date/time. Image never loads.

  2. Using the record video button doesn’t seem to work.

  3. In Mode configuration “What to do if an armed sensor trips?” “Record and store video” is the only option (I thought other cameras used to store snapshots). This option also doesn’t appear to actually record.

  4. I could’ve sworn you used to be able to use cameras in scenes. This one is not showing up as a device action at all. Not an option.

Thanks for all the helpful advice on this thread, without it I’d never have got my camera anywhere close to functional.

I’m running a Vera Edge with latest firmware, along with a Foscam FI982W, also with latest firmware. I’ve set all my settings as per the instructions here and my camera works for some of the time, but I’m left with two issues:

  1. Intermittently the camera drops, I have a Fibaro motion sensor that sends a still photo from the camera as an alert when triggered, which works about 50% of the time, the rest of the time I get the message but no picture.
  2. When I go to the Vera Edge Dashboard the camera reports as “Not detected” 100% of the time, it also shows up the same way in Devices, but when I switch to camera I can see the thumbnail and can click to view the live stream with nor poblems.
  3. It doesn’t work at all on my phone using Vera Home app.

Feels like I’m so close to getting this working properly, anyone resolved any of these issues?

Since last weekend, I got my Foscam FI9821W V2 operational. I used this post to configure the webcam on my Vera Edge with the latest firmware version. These are the firmware versions for the Foscam:
System Firmware Version 1.4.1.9
Application Firmware Version 2.11.2.8
Plug-In Version 2.0.2.10

Next step is to store the images to my Synology NAS triggered by any movement. Need some time to figure out.

Al101uk, I am curious if your camera is connected via Ethernet or Wifi? I have two FI9821W cameras. They are configured identical with one exception. One is Ethernet and one is Wifi due to their locations. The Ethernet one is perfectly stable. The Wifi one gets the “Not detected” message constantly even though they both can Pan and Tilt as well as provide images.

@kendad

I had a similar issue with 1 of the 4 Foscam FI9821W but all were wireless. Turns out the camera that had the Not Connected issue was that the Foscam firmware needed updating. The other 3 cameras had the correct firmware but the 4th was a few versions behind. Hope it helps.

Kendad,

I’m not sure what happened but the issue seems to have resolved itself… I read a few things which I tried and I changed one additional setting, any of which could have something to do with the fix, but I’m not sure if it was something I did or just a temporary blip. Anyway, for what it’s worth here are the things I’ve been trying over the last 24 hours or so:

  1. I changed the Modesetting from “1:;2:;3:;4:” to “1:A;2:A;3:A;4:A” in Variables (must have missed this originally)
  2. I rebooted my router because I was having issues getting to the routers config page
  3. While on the config page I added a DHCP reservation for the camera, the IP was fixed, but I’ve been messing around so decided to apply this.
  4. I disabled UPnP and DDNS on the camera
  5. Finally I moved to a wired connection.

The camera has been left alone for the last 24 hours and suddenly it’s pinged in to life, I finally, for the first time, have “Your installation is OK” in Vera, the camera shows in the dashboard, with thumbnail, it shows correctly but with thumbnail in devices and shows correctly with thumbnail and able to live stream with pan and tilt correctly from “Cameras”. I can also see it with no issues from my phone.

I’d love to have a fix, but I guess it’s worth knowing that some changes may take a while (DHCP leases?) to take effect and kick in on the Vera.

Then again, this may be temporary… we’ll see.

I’m using a Virgin Media Superhub with the Foscam connected directly too it, although my wireless tends to be through a few Apple Airport Express’s I have dotted around the place. I think I have enough evidence to suggest that the camera, Vera, your router, the sun, the moon and the stars all have to align correctly for this thing to work properly and as the cameras final location isn’t near a wired connection I’m not quite there yet.

Confirmed Wifi issue, as soon as I disconnected and reconfigured for wifi I got the same problems back >:(

Camera back to being slightly intermittent, permanently showing as not connected on Vera, not accessible by phone… so frustrating.

Please tell me how you got the Foscam 9831 to work in Vera.

Just two tips if someone else is looking for this:

  1. The zip file (mentioned in step 1) does not show up unless you are logged in.
  2. The “upload” portion is not using ftp/sftp or anything similar, it is using the menus.
