Foscam FI9821W - Support & How-To

Super happy to hear that it can work for somebody else. Any reason not to share the configuration here for the rest of us mushrooms?

I gave up and used support as well. They were very helpful and I asked what they were using to add the cameras. They linked me to this article.

I would like to thanks Aaron because I just installed a 9821w V2 using your post and worked perfect.
Thanks ;D

First I want to start with a HUGE Thanks to Aaron. I pretty much followed his instructions on the settings, and the only file I actually uploaded to the Vera was the I_Foscam98HD.xml. I see a lot of people stating when they added the camera they got the box with an X in it. I also got the same thing, but just finished through. One thing I did figure out was that you have to use a user/pass that has been granted with administrator access from within the Foscam camera. I tried to get this working using an operator login, but the PTZ functions were not working. This method is functional in my Veralite cp , Veramobile, ImperiHome, and AutHomationHD.

UPDATE
I just completed adding the second camera. Once I got the 2 cameras functional in CP, i started getting errors in VeraMobile about “Incorrect Camera Configuration for video streaming, running in emulation mode.”

Any ideas? This is occurring on both cameras.

I finally gave up and contacted Vera Tech support. Thanks to Michael I have partial function when I add the port address every time I log in.

I still have two problems:

  1. the setting and advanced setting tab keep forgetting the port. Has anyone else run into this problem? I add the port after the ip :81xx in the setting and advanced tab save. It keeps disappearing if I log out and log back in .

  2. the Zoom feature doesn’t seem to be working. Any ideas anyone?

The advanced setting seem to match with arrons original post unless I’m missing something.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have an 9821 v2 and to the best of my knowledge it does not have zoom capability. Only pan and tilt.

I use standard port 80 soi I don’t have to add it. Have you tried prefixing the value in the DirectStreamingURL and URL field with the :81xx value?

No, How would I do that the ip address isn’t part of the DirectStreamingURL and URL field

/cgi-bin/CGIStream.cgi?cmd=GetMJStream&usr=&pwd=

(of course my entries have actual user and password values)

Change

/cgi-bin/CGIStream.cgi?cmd=GetMJStream&usr=&pwd=

to

:pppp/cgi-bin/CGIStream.cgi?cmd=GetMJStream&usr=&pwd=

where pppp is your port number.

Thanks for the response BOFH

I made the change to add the port to the url advanced entries but it didn’t help.

Disappearing port problem solved by removing the Mac address from the advanced tab. Thanks to Michael at Vera Tech support

I followed Aaron’s instructions and everything appears to be working as expected. Thanks Aaron. The Foscam FI9821W V2 has System Firmware: 1.4.1.9, Application Firmware: 2.11.1.10, and Plug-in Version: 3.0.0.1. The Vera Lite is UI5 and firmware 1.5.622. Most of the fields that Aaron said to fill in were already filled in, so I just had to check them to be sure they were correct. I can also get the video feed on my iPhone using Vera Mobile. Very nice.

I did notice one thing that was a little strange. After loading the three files from the zip archive, I noticed that the device files (D_…) appeared twice in the list of Apps/Develop Apps/Luup files.

This is the first camera I have added to Vera, so I’m not sure yet what I want to do with the possibilities that Vera permits. The camera already is capable of taking snapshots, video, and sending emails based on motion detection, without the help of Vera.

Today I tried to connect to the IP camera from VeraLite via a remote connection and it said something like “No image available”. When I checked the advanced tab, my ip address:port had been changed to something completely different and wrong. For example, if I had set my address:port to 192.168.10.131:12345 a week ago, then today it was 192.168.10.145 without a port number. It’s flakey. I changed the address:port back to the correct ones and it now works again.

Again the Vera Lite lost the port info and changed the ip address. I had to enter the correct ip address:port to get it to work.

If you have the MAC address field populated with a value, remove what ever is in the field and save.

Garrett,

Thanks for the recommendation. I saw that suggestion elsewhere, but I decided to follow the instructions at the beginning of this thread. It is removed now.

Thanks again.

Camera motion is HIGHLY inaccurate… it simply looks for pixel changes… so, lighting changes are no difference than a person walking. I suggest using a real PIR, I’ve had success with the Schlage version. Use the PIR to detect motion, and trigger the cam to start recording.[/quote]

Aaron,

It is possible to trigger the camera to record video to the ftp server based on a motion detection from a z-wave device (like the Schlage PIR)? I’d like to do this with these four devices: the camera, the IR motion sensor, the Vera Lite, and the ftp server. Is there a URL I could sent to the camera from Vera Lite that means “alarm condition” or “record now”? If so, I could make this work with a simple scene and a little luup to send the URL. I actually would like the URL for a FI9805W, if possible.

Thanks,
Rob

I use Synology for my security recording. So when the zwave motion triggers I send a command to that system to start recording. I suspect you may be able to do the same with Vera but I don’t know how to guide you there.

Thanks Aaron / all on this post!

I was able to add 2 x FI9821W V2’s to my system - with the Pan/Tilt working. I plan to use some type of recording software - and do what Aaron suggests here using the PIR to detect motion, and start the record.

I am planning to add say 4 more cameras (2 out, and 2 more inside) to round out my security endeavors. I like the cost/ROI factor of the FI9821W V2’s - HOWEVER - can someone recommend a slightly more advanced / better FOSCAM for more $$? Is it worth the extra $$?

Thanks again Aaron / All!

How does Vera talk to your Synology?
