Foscam FI8908W Wireless IP Camera

Mine works great. I just tested it from a remote location last weekend. It was working well through iVera, but sometimes crashes the app and this time left me unable to reconnect at all remotely. This wasn’t the camera’s fault, as it still worked fine through SQ Remote and UI4 (although gives two camera images when using UI4 on the iTouch’s Safari).

This trip made me question my need for a camera after getting past the fun of turning on and off lights and checking the camera for visual confirmation. I need to get one on the front door and setup recording on movement.

Mine no longer works through a non-IE browser. I didn’t make any changes to the settings or update the firmware, in Firefox, I now see a square and nothing where the video should be.

Ok, time to eat about 50% crow here…I got one to work ::slight_smile:

I sold both my cams to a friend, he got one to work and one is bricked (if you don’t know what I’m talking about you haven’t seen me complain about these cams or foscam support in this thread). He decided to give me a hand (and sell back if we got it) and after hours…got it. Now I have the outdoor FI8904W working (even wirelessly!) but I can not get Vera to see it. I’m sure it’s me but I’ve spent a couple hours trying and reading and I just can’t get it. Do I need to set up port forwarding?

Here’s what I have, please tell me where I’m wrong…

I gladly accept any abuse coming my way…well half of it anyway but I would love to get this up and going if possible.

You might try skipping the Mac address, as it wasn’t needed. If it self-populated that field then I would think that is a good sign. At first glance things look well set up, but I’ll check against mine when I get home later. So it does work directly through the same browser that you are viewing UI4 through?

Don’t forget to click SAVE in Vera and to refresh the browser window.

I won’t tease you about getting the cam working as you did have a dead one and that would cause reduced patience with the one that could have worked. Patience and persistence is key to anything tech and I know it sometimes it is best to walk away and come back with a new perspective or a friend with a different perpective.

Under url try putting /snapshot.cgi without the ip address. Good Luck

Missed that, good call Ron, that looks like the problem.

Ok, that did it but now another issue. I left my house and it didn’t work anymore, so off my network I can’t see them.

Ok, not one full week and the thing isn’t working again. It was working fine then I moved it and it won’t join my network again.

Having taken a view on all the comments, and the price, I have purchased a Foscam F18918W (the recent upgrade).

I have installed the Windows software and it worked immediately in Windows. However, I cannot get it to work with Vera2 (UI4 + latest firmware).

My setup is as follows:

Netgear Wireless router (192.168.0.1)
Windows 2003 (192.168.0.2)

I setup the camera with a static IP of 192.168.0.100 and ran it both wired, and wifi on my existing wireless channel from the netgear under Windows. All worked fine.

I added the camera to Vera: (Vera2 IP 192.168.0.4 (DHCP) connected to the netgear)

Entered	Settings:	URL: /snapshot.cgi
                                           User: admin (camera default)
                                           Pwd: (camera default)
		MAC:	000dc5do5863
		IP:	192.168.0.100

Encryption: WPA2 (I tried with no encryption on Vera wifi and camera to no effect)

Using the Windows management tool with the camera lan connected, I scanned the wifi channels and selected the Vera wifi and unplugged the lan a few seconds after the reboot started. The green led blinks rapidly to indicate it is operating in wifi mode.

Go to the camera in Vera and no picture.

Any ideas, or is there something I should look for in the logs to identify why Vera is not accessing the camera?

You might try deleting the MAC address as I didn’t have to put that in, if I remember correctly. You are correct to try to connect to the camera without encryption first and then see if you can get it working with encryption. I believe I am running mine with WPA2 wirelessly and it has never dropped the connection.

The default passwords should be fine, but it might be worth changing them to something very simple and try again. If all elese fails I’d look at the IP address you are assigning it, maybe it would do better without a static IP until you can prove it works through Vera then go back and make it static.

Tried all that and still no joy.

It would be useful if some process steps were displayed in the image window rather than just saying Trying to get image At least then there might be a clue as to what is wrong.

I have a Linksys camera which I will try and install and come back to the Foscam later.

I would set it manually with a static IP from your netgear router and see if you can reach the snaphot url manually from a browser on your PC via the IP: e.g. http://XX.XX.XX.XX/snapshot.cgi

You should also try to ping it from withing vera if you are comfortable using SSH

Good suggestions Strangely. I also noticed this post:

http://forum.micasaverde.com/index.php?topic=3591.msg18361#msg18361

earlier in this thread that states that the IP address you are using may have changed between wired and wireless. Maybe you can statically assign an IP to the Ethernet, but when switching to wireless it tries to get a new IP. Worth investigating.

Also are you sure that the Plug-In file you have loaded is updated with the proper info fo pan and tilt. Be sure you install the Panasonic Plug-In first, then modify the file or just install the one I uploaded to the forum here:

http://forum.micasaverde.com/index.php?topic=3720.msg21954#msg21954

Getting closer.

I used the Windows tool to set the camera to DHCP rather than a static IP address.

Then connected it to the second Ethernet port on Vera2.

Then selected Advanced > Net / Wifi > Advanced Configuration and Login to Vera

Select the Network drop-down and DHCP. The DHCP form shows my camera MAC and the allocated IP address on the Vera 192.168.81 subnet.

Add the Camera using the panasonic config file and in the camera settings enter the 192.168.81.nnn address.

Upload Shady’s Foscam version of the Panasonic config file and restart Luup.

I can now use pan and tilt so the camera is there but no picture. I am wondering if the F18918W version of the camera has a different url for the snapshot?

After I get a picture I will try going to wireless.

@cramer, please see my last post about trying to reach the snapshot URL manually from a PC. If you can reach its setup page but not the snapshot url then its safe to assume that perhaps it has been moved.

Where did you buy the camera from?

Hi Strangely,

I bought the camera from Ebay. It doesn’t seem to be a clone.

I rebooted Vera and then the PT controls stopped working so I thought I may as well try a wireless connect.

I disconnected the lan cable to Vera’s second ethernet port and waited till the camera’s green led started fast blinking (connected to wifi). I then went back into DHCP on Vera, as per my last post, and I see the MAC for the camera’s wireless interface with assigned IP. I went back to settings and entered the IP. I left snapshot.cgi as the capture url. Nothing worked. I decided I needed a break and have just returned and now I find I have a picture and can operate the PT controls. I am starting to find that doing nothing with
Vera is sometimes the right course of action.

After a bit longer the PT controls still work but the picture is not updating in Camera Control tab. That seems like a Vera problem. Is there a way of forcing Vera to caprure a frame from a camera?

Further update, I refreshed the browser and now the picture is updating when moving the camera.

Sounds like the secret Vera pixies came in and fixed it while you weren’t watching

Lets hope those pixies like my place, I am going to try installing a Linksys camera tomorrow.

Good luck!

By the way, I just remembered that quite often if you save a change after adding a plugin then it may not always work correctly until you hit the Vera refresh icon in the right hand corner. It seems some devices need a further restart of the Lua engine I think, and this maybe why you never got it to work first time!

Does anyone know if the Foscam FI8905W will work with our setup?
or am I the first to try this one???

I asked for it as well as the Fi8908W for Xmass but I have a feeling this is the one I’m getting first
