Firmware / UI - Questions of a newby

Hello,

since a few days I´m a glad owner of the Vera Gateway.

But I´m totaly confused about the Firmware / UI.

First of all I get this problem: When I log in to my Vera Setup I get the following message

Testing connection to: download.controlmyhouse.net … OK
There is a newer version of the software available, and it’s highly recommended that I upgrade my software now.
Running Version 1.1.116
Latest Version 1.1.319
→ Button: Upgrade to the English version

When I click the button i get this error:

Please wait while downloading firmware image …
Failed to download the Firmware Url!!!
→ Button: Click here and try again

When I click try again its the same again.

After that I searched for a solve in this board and saw that there are many different firmwares and UIs.

But could someone explain me whats the difference between the firmware which I cant update and the UI? Can I update them separate? Or is the UI integrated in the firmware?

And where can I see what UI is installed on my Vera? And where can I update the UI?

I found this thread: http://forum.micasaverde.com/index.php?topic=3493.0

There is a link to firmware 1.1.329 for UI13. Can I simply put in this link manually in the box “custom firmware” below the not working auto-update?

Would be great if someone can help me out.

btw: sorry for my poor englisch :-[ That doesnt make it easier for me to check out the Vera manual ;D

Which model Vera do you have? If you just purchased it recently then you most likely have a Vera 2 unit.

UI2 is an older user interface that is based off of html.

UI3 is a flash based interface. If you want to use this interface. Go to the link that you posted and copy the url into the firmware upgrade box. This will download the firmware and install it.

UI4 is a new user interface that will be out to the public very soon. It is html/java based. You can install this interface if you would like. However the build that is available to the public is not the most current. If you want to try and use UI4 you can go to the following link and follow the instructions: http://www.micasaverde.com/vera2

Ok, so the UI will automatically change depending on the firmware that is installed?

One thing that wonder me is, when i start the Vera setup it says, that the newest firmware that was found is 1.1.319. But the newest firmware that I linked in my first post is 1.1.329.

Is that just a failure in the text? Or is 1.1.329 a beta firmware or something?

Anyway, would you advise me to update to the firmware from the link above?

How will the firmware update function if I put in the link in the box? Fully automatic? Or do I have to watch out for something?

Is there a change log for the firmwares where I can see whats the difference between my installed 1.1.116 and the newer 1.1.329?

Thanks and best regards

PS: Yes I think i got the Vera2. I just bought it one week ago and I got the version with the battery pack instead of the USB Dongle.

You will only get firmware upgrades for the UI you are using. So if you are on UI3, it should only provide you upgrades for that UI.

I am not sure about UI3 and why it is not showing the most current. In the thread posted by MCV, they list 1.1.329 as being the final stable release.

If you want to stick with UI 3, then it can not hurt to update to the latest stable firmware.

The firmware should be automatic once you put the link into the firmware upgrade box. It will tell you that it is upgrading and should wait about 15 minutes. When it is done, it will say that the firmware upgrade is complete and should direct you to the direct link to get to the control panel of the web interface.

As for the change log, MCV may have a post somewhere with changes. But they have a tendency not to post the exact changes between each build. From what I have seen so far, they just summarize on the key changes i.e. a major bug that had to be fixed.

You have a Vera2. If you want to give the UI4 a try, you can upgrade it via the link here:

UI4’s official release should be announced hopefully soon. They are working on getting the minor issues worked out now before making it public. But for the most part, it is a solid release. You will need to upgrade to UI4 if you intend to use the door locks.

Hi Garret,

thanks for that detailed answer. I think now I got it

The only thing im not sure is, when you say:

You will only get firmware upgrades for the UI you are using. So if you are on UI3, it should only provide you upgrades for that UI.[/quote]

So if I got UI3 installed, the setup only provide the newest firmware update for the UI3.

But how could I update to UI4? The same way, with the difference that the setup won´t provide me the UI4 firmware, but I can put the link manually in the box?

Thanks so far

If you want to go to UI4 go to http://www.micasaverde.com/vera2 and that should kind your Vera and ask if you want to proceed with the upgrade. I believe for UI3 you need to provide the link. I have not used UI3. So I am guessing here.

Hi,

The http://micasaverde.com/vera2 page will automatically upgrade any Vera (Vera 1, Vera 2, UI2, UI3 or UI4) to the latest UI4 version which we publish.
