I’m interested in adding a gas log fireplace using natural gas and controlling that through home automation.
Based on some initial research, utilizing a gas log with a millivolt system would work. A switch on the wall would connect two wires that would in turn start the gas log. This approach would work, but I’m not particularly crazy about having a pilot light running all the time to accomplish this. I’d prefer having an electronic ignition system with a battery backup in place. What I’m seeing though is that the more expensive electronic ignition systems don’t offer the wall switch option, but rather a wireless remote control that would be harder to interface with. My question is does anyone know of any brands gas logs which support electronic ignition and a wall switch or some type of a home automation interface?
I bought a house that has the heat-n-glo sl-750. It has electric ignition with a wall switch.
When we moved in, it wasn’t working (wall switch only turned the pilot on) so I downloaded all the manuals and researched different models. I wasn’t sure at first if there was a missing remote.
During my research I saw that a lot of the electric ignition models from heat-n-glo come with the wall switch option as the default and remotes are upgrades (you need a remote receiver module).
My problem turned out to be simple. I read somewhere that the most valuable tool for a fireplace repairman was a hammer. If it wasn’t started in a while, you just bang on the pipes and the ignition module a couple of times and voila it works.
