DSC Alarm integration for dummies

Hi folks - I found this: DSC Alarm Panel

and I have a DSC alarm panel (actually 3) as the security system in my home. So I’m hopeful I’ll actually be able to integrate my alarm system with my new Vera.

That said, the link is a bit too dense for me – here are my questions I’m hoping someone can help with:

  1. My DSC alarm panels control my ADT home security system. Is it still possible to use MiCasaVerde to automate?
  2. If so, is there a tutorial somewhere? It appears that I have to find some place to purchase an IT100 somewhere and find some way to interface it…but I’m not sure what I interface it with. The link doesn’t really explain…can someone help me understand? I’m presuming I tie in a zwave controller somewhere?
  3. If yes to #2, then perhaps all of the sensors in the DSC system will be visible through the controller?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Simple answer to first question is Yes.
There are a number of separate threads/post which answer most of your questions and I have all intention when time permits to update the wiki to reflect the current systems and interfaces available.

The compatible alarm systems or DSCAlarm systems include the 1864, 1832, 1616 and a current interfaces vera and your alarm systems include the EVL3, 2ds (older model) and the IT 100 as mentioned.

The best solution is the EVL3 which is wired to your alarm system the same as a keypad and integrate to your local network. All is left is to install the plug in from the App Store and insert setting.

Sorry for the short answer but I must leave this for now. You will also need installer code to you DSC alarm and inform ADT your working on it when you start.

It is REALLY EASY…

I have the 1616 DSC Panel monitored by ADT. This is all you have to do:

  1. Call ADT and tell them to put you in Test mode for 24 hours
  2. Go in your attic and unplug the power to your alarm system (look for a plug that is screwed into the receptacle)
  3. Connect the 3 or 4 wires from the EVL3 to your Panel (it doesn’t come with wires so just use some of the extra wire you probably have in the panel from a longer connection)
  4. Connect a network cable to the EVL3
  5. Go back into the attic and plug the power back in for the alarm panel.
  6. Use a tool like Fing on your iPhone/iPad to find the ip address of the EVL3 and log into it through a browser
  7. Tell the EVL3 to Keep the current IP Address (you’ll need to enter this into Vera)
  8. Install the app in Vera from the App Store
  9. Click Configure on the Alarm Panel module and select “EnvisaLink” then go to settings and enter the IP Address of the EVL3 board.

That’s really about it. It’s been a while since I set mine up so there may be a couple more little settings that you may need but you will find all those in these forums. You can have everything setup in 30 minutes or less, well worth the $100 for the EVL3 to now have control of my Alarm system through Vera and be able to use all the door/window and motion sensors already installed.

I have mine setup so that when I or one of my children enter their code on the front door it automatically Disarms the alarm. I also have vera start a timer when someone opens a door and if it stays open longer then 2 minutes it send an iOS Alert to me and my wife through the MiOS app called iOS Alerts Letting us know the door is still open. I have another timer that starts when you open the back door and sends an alert after 10 minutes to remind my wife to let her dog back inside. All these scenes are triggered using the sensors on the Alarm system, and the status is instant, very nice.

Old topic but appropriate to add info I think.

This house I just moved into had an original DSC pc1555MX panel with 7 zones. Sometime after the previous homeowner decided to go with Vivint 2gig Go!Control. They installed the 2gig TAKE 345 wired to wireless zone converter at the DSC panel and no longer needed to DSC 1555MX, only the power supply main bus etc.

The 2gig panel is redundant to Vera and no real way to interface with it so I decided to revive the original 1555MX system. I have no keypad 1so I decided to get the Envisilink 3 and connect it to the 1555mx via ethernet. The DSC wall box had a cat5 cable in it that went all the way to the telco demarc for a analog phone line. I traced it to the attic and spliced 2 pair of wires to another cable that goes to my LAN switch. Works good. The EVL3 came right up.

The DSC1555MX was accessible and recognized by the Vera and EVL3, however I had no original codes to arm/disarm/config etc. I tried all the default codes, called the original alarm company etc, no joy. They also disabled the reset to factory feture. Its useless.

I have a PC1864 on the way, stay tuned. I will also order an RFK5500 keypad but will construct a DSC PCLink DB9 cable to use with my laptop and DSC software to program the board from scratch.

I just read the fire alarm thread and will look to install the relay between alarms and the panel.

I installed the PC1864 and used DLS 2002 and PClink homemade cable to set it up. The board I bought on ebay was a ADT specific model so the default code is 6321 vs 5555. The DLS downloading code is 632100. set your com port for 110,N,8,1 in the properties in windows. I then changed the PC1864 to 300 baud. I was able to set it all up without a keypad. I also noticed that you can have the DLS software queued up at “waiting to connect” and connect the 4 pin cable at the board and it will connect to the software without having to do the “499” thing. The EVL3 also works perfectly.

Now I am trying to wrap my head around what I can do in Vera in the way of scenes etc.

I found the end-of-the line fire detector, unfortunately its on the bottom floor of my 2-story house. Not sure how I am going to get it into my alarm panel yet.
