So my DSC 1864 showed up today. I ordered a myriad of parts including:
PC1864NK - PC1864NK - DSC Power Series 1864 Control Board & Enclosure
EVL-3 - Envisalink Internet Alert Module for DSC & Honeywell Security
TR5164-433 - DSC PowerSeries 2-Way Wireless Transceiver
SD15W - DSC 15W Indoor Siren
BD712 - 12 Volt 7AH Alarm System Battery
WS4904P - DSC Wireless Pet Immune PIR Motion Sensor
WS4916 - DSC Wireless Smoke Detector
WT5500 - DSC Alexor 2-Way Wireless LCD Keypad
XR-1640LED - 16.5 40VA Transformer
PLUNGER-D - ION Security DSC Compatible Wireless Door Sensor
MICRA-D - ION Security DSC Compatible Wireless Window Sensor
EV-DW4975 - Vanishing Wireless Door Window Sensor
WT4989 - DSC Alexor 2-Way Wireless Keyfob
I am at the very first installation steps. I attached the board to the enclosure box. My stupid questions are:
My transformer came with no wires to attach to the board. Can I use simple speaker wire? It has two screws to attach the wire to the transformer, but I am unsure if I need a specific type of wire for this.
Also, the Envisalink also attaches to the board thru some wires, also not included. Are there special wires I should be using?
The only other wired thing I could think of is the TR5164-433 (and of course the siren).
I realize these are likely the dumbest questions you’ve seen, but I am technical…just not on electrical/wiring. I don’t want to do anything that would damage the board or devices, so I thought I would ask the gurus.
Some lamp cord or speaker wire will work fine. The output of the transformer is low voltage and low current, so you don’t need anything special.
Go get some 4 conductor wire (18-22 gauge, doesn’t matter) from Home Depot/Lowes/etc. 5 conductor thermostat wire is what I used…you can purchase it by the foot since you only need a short stretch for the EVL3. You’ll want each wire to have a separate color so you keep track of each connection as you wire it up. If they only have 5 or 6 conductor wire, you can use that and just cut short the unused conductors.
I’m guessing that the TR5164 will use the same 4-wire bus as the EVL-3. If so, use the same wire there too.
For the siren, simple two conductor wire (like doorbell wire) will work.
Looking good John. Hopefully the install goes well and you can reply back with maybe some of the gotchas or difficulties you experience during the install. That will help others, like myself, when I decide to do a similar installation.

What are you using the plunger sensors for?
Are you going to do 3rd party monitoring?
Thx[/quote]
I definitely will post successes/challenges. The plunger sensor is for the doors…it goes in the door frame and therefore gives a clean look with no visible alarm magnets.
No 3rd party monitoring (at this point)…self monitoring.
I didn’t think the EVL-3 connects to the Veralite…rather it connects to the alarm panel and to the network (via ethernet). So I assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that it would communicate with the veralite via the network.
You are correct. I meant the network but didn’t know of where you were putting your panel had a hard wire/Ethernet cable already in that location. My existing panel doesn’t have a Ethernet run close to it at all so I will possible have to see if I can find a dongle of some sort like they offered on some televisions that converted to a wireless type connection.

Ah, ok (whew). Yes, the panel will be located next to an ethernet outlet. There’s so much I don’t know but I love the learning process. I remember my partner saying “What the hell are you doing” when I had cracked open our (then) brand new Tivo to add hard drive and ethernet (back then, Tivo’s were very new and very expensive). I certainly could not take on projects like this without the generous support and expertise of folks like garrett and the others!
