I’m designing a potentially new set up for my heating and rather than having thermostats on the radiators I’m toying with the idea of adding a directly controlled 2-way valve for each room. Controlled directly by its own z-way relay (ideally one with a manual override e.g the ASR-ZW from Horstmann)
In most cases I understand these valves are tied into the boiler wiring or the timer / programmer so it’s would not be able to make a direct call the boiler when opened but maybe via an association to another z-wave relay it should be able to.
Has anyone tried this or maybe someone has a similar set up running today?
If you decide to use the ASR-ZW, bear in mind that it includes a built-in watchdog that will cause it to switch off if it doesn’t receive a Z-Wave command for 60 minutes. I have a PLEG condition/action that resends the last command every 30 minutes to keep it happy. This works well and even accommodates manual override without problems.
Would polling work as a 'z-wave command' to keep it awake?
I know that polling is not sufficient to keep it awake. It has to be a send command.
Also if you have an 'association' running with another relay (assuming that's possible) I wonder if that set up would keep each the ASR-ZW awake ?
I doubt it. An association with another Z-Wave device would not result in regular commands unless there was a change in status.
However if I use it with the HRT4-ZW them then this stay awake reminder would not be needed.
Now that I do agree with. The HRT4-ZW resends the status command to its associated relay(s) periodically.
I don’t know whether an ASR-ZW will function as an association master. Even if it doesn’t you could use a scene or PLEG to fire your boiler when one of the room valves is open.
Compared to a Z-Wave thermostat e.g a Danfoss Living Connect at 55 GBP
The cost to create an individually managed room, which has a wall mounted thermostat is going be a fair bit more, (and that’s excluding the extra for the installation ) but theoretically it should be a better user experience and perform more accurately/economically than a TRV.
25 GBP - A 2 port motorised valve
70 GBP - Horstmann HRT4-ZW & ASR-ZW
