Dashboard Usability

I don’t want to sound overly picky - I like Vera, but IMHO dashboard looks bad, actually really bad.

From layout to quality of graphics - it looks mid-90’s of last century at best. In these days of Web2.0 this screen can severely affect initial perception of potential customers - at least those who read and search before buying. I’m not even talking about Ajax and Flash based UI - I’m talking about basic web design - look, layout, usability.
Rest of the site looks pretty, last century but pretty, but Dashboard is better to be redone.

I understand what you mean. I believe it is in the work but they certainly want to have to product running smoothly before anything else. I agree with you good 2.0 would be awesome but If I had to choose I rather have a flawless product.

A agree that the graphics are not very exciting. However the function should be addressed first. And I’m not sure if it is offering the best functionality. However the device its displayed on is another limitation. On a touchscreen I would like a floorplan with meaningfull dynamic graphics, however that would be very frustrationg on a small display,if you can’t read it or control it easily.
I think pointing to examples of UI’s that address similar problems that look good would be very useful. (Seems like this belongs in the UI section.)

We don’t have good graphics design guys in house. So we want to finalize the functionality and the UI spec first, then get some good creative UI designs to make it pretty. One limitation will be, though, that Vera doesn’t have a lot of memory or power for back-end stuff, like sometimes is required with Web 2.0 apps. But we’ve been debating doing a nice flash app because all the heavy lifting is done client side.

Well, I exaggerated mentioning AJAX and Flash - it’s clear that these pals are CPU and memory hogs and would be largely inappropriate in embedded application.

Just make it pretty enough.
