Cree CR6 LED Downlight

Does anybody have any experience with the Cree CR6 LED downlight? Cree says it’s compatible with a Leviton 600W dimmer and it can be dimmed down to 5%.

They’re still fairly expensive at $50, but I’m hoping it can be a replacement for when they ban 60w incandescents in the next 5 years.

I have a bunch of the Cree CR6. I have replaced most of my downlights with these. They work great with GE 45613 Z-Wave Three way dimmer.

Thanks for the reply - I’m looking at replacing all of my kitchen lights with these.

I’m running over 100 of these lights, all on Leviton z-wave dimmers. I think they’re outstanding: good color, instant on, dimmable, last nearly forever. Have a few that do flicker if you dim all the way to 5%, they’re fine at 10% which is close enough. Do have a few that will occasionally flicker a bit at certain other levels but easily cured by a bump up or down in the level).

But absolutely thrilled with them vs. CFL. Home Depot carries them in store. Local power company ran a special subsidizing them, so was able to get them at $39/each. Still pricey, but happy with the performance, definitely worth it to me.

Great news! Thanks!

Not only does Home Depot have them, they are now reduced to $19.97, I just bought 5 of them… Tried one on a single GE dimmer, and it does fluctuate a bit even at full “on” (this is the Radio Shack GE dimmer). The other Dimmer will have (4) of these on it, so my guess is that one will be fine (with a 42W load on it), each LED lamp is 10.5 Watts.

They are availble in-store only…

Wow! That’s a deal. They’re not even available in store for me.

Can you expand on the flucuations you’re having on the single GE dimmer? I’m going to have the same type of setup, and it has to pass inspection by the boss. Does it flicker a lot at all dim levels?

It show up at 49.97 on the HD website. It this an in-store price?

At the dimmer, even when its “full on”, with a single CREE lamp, there is a slow pulsing of bright to dim, not too noticeable, unless you are looking directly at the bulb. I don’t expect this to be an issue in the kitchen, which will have 4 of these bulbs on 1 dimmer (42 watts), I think it’s just an issue because of the very low wattage (a single light is only 10.5 watts), this is even mentioned in the instructions, that multiple lamps should be fine on dimmers, but a single may have issues.

One more thing, they say they only fit 6" housings (5.75" to 6.5" of width), and you need at least 6.5" of height as well. Well, I had a 5" housing in the one I’ve done so far, and I was able to fit it in, now as far as removing it, that may be another issue, but I can worry about that in 15-20 years when it finally goes south (35,000 hours of life, in theory)

Yes, the $19.97 price is in-store only, and I am in the Northeast (Boston area), I’ve heard they are priced higher in other parts of the country. I might be willing to pick some up and ship them out for a few people… They come in cartons of 12. With 4 lamps per “tray”, and they are kind of bulky in the packaging, but not that heavy to ship. My local Home Depot had none, but the stores all around it had anywhere from 100 to 125 each.

Mitch,

Do you have a SKU or UPC code for the package? I’d like to pick up a set, so I figure I’ll call the local stores to find out their price.

Thanks.

Yes, the part # is “499-485”, “EcoSmart LED Downlight with Integrated Trim”

the part # on the instruction sheet is “ECO-575L, ECO-GU24-575L” (the 2nd one is if you are using a GU24 style socket)

and, of course these are made in China :frowning:

FYI, this is the PDF instruction sheet that comes in the package, might be helpfull to measure your existing cans, to see if they will fit. I did manage to get 1 on a 5" wide can… even though it sais 5.75"-6.5" width required, you also need 6.5" of height.

This is the recomended dimmer list, from CREE for these as well…

Mitch,

Thanks. I called our local store, and they bulbs are the regular price of $49.99 there. They did tell me that if you can get me the store number you bought them from, it’s possible that they would match the price. Do you have the store number? Hopefully, it’s on the top of the receipt.

Thanks again.

-Robert

I’m at work, don’t have the receipt… the store is on Belmont Street, in Brockton, MA, if they can look it up…

Cool. That should work.

Thanks for the help.

Seems like the $19.97 pricing is only a weekly special in MA, but other stores will honor that price as well. I just called my local store in South Florida; after checking with the stores in MA, the store manager offered to match the price. Hard to resist at that price; so I got 4 of them already.

I hope to see more GU10 socket, LED dimmable bulbs, so I can start replacing my 50W halogen bulbs inside 3" diameter recessed light fixtures.

ok then, glad I could save some of you some money…

I just installed the other (4) in the kitchen, which has the GE Zwave dimmer, works great, no pulsing, very smooth dimming also… It will pass the “WAF” (Wife Acceptance Factor), for those of you with that issue

On another note, Radio Shack has again reduced the price of the GE Zwave modules, the plug in lamp and appliance are now $9.97 (was $14.97), the dimable 3 way and standard are $14.97 (was $19.97), the 2 GE controllers are also down to $9.97 as well (the simple one used to be $19.97, the LCD version that can control Zwave thermostats used to be $21.97), both are now $9.97

Also, the outdoor appliance module is also down to $9.97 (again, was $14.97)

looks like they are trying to clear it all out…

Mitch

I have been looking at this 9w LED GU10 to replace my 50W halogen.

I’m not sure if the bulb has any heat issues but it does have a 2 year warranty.

Thanks JimMac,

Funny you mention this, I just went to a Chili’s restaurant last night, and I saw the exact same form factor but no branding other than a sticker from CREE. The bulbs were a little hot, but nothing compared to the heat than a 50W halogen will generate (I was able to take the bulb out of the socket with my bare hands, and I am pretty sure it must have been on for most of the day … I had to do this to see who the manufacturer was, but nothing other than a CREE sticker on the bulb itself.)

Expensive, but very good alternative; especially in terms of power savings. If I order any of them, I will post some sort of a quick review (I wish they were just a little less expensive, so I can just order some of them without feeling guilty).

Here is another online retailer (also in Canada) that has 9W GU10 dimmable LED replacements for the 50W halogen bulbs.

http://www.ecolumenation.com/products/9-Watt-Dimmable-GU10-CREE-LED-Light-Bulb.html

If any of the forums readers lives in Canada and could check them out and report on their products, it will be fantastic. I think LED is still an evolving technology (1 - 2 years before it really catches up to consumer market); but the energy savings can be significant compared to halogen or incandescent.

I just bought 10 of these in NH - pricematched to the Mass price of 19.97 and there is a NHsaves.com $10 mail in rebate on each one as it is a complete lighting fixture - end price $9.97 each, no tax!

I just replaced a bunch of my recessed lighting with them, they are AWESOME! Brighter than the 65W BR30’s that were in the cans already, and the same warm incandescent light!

I only wish I had more recessed lights to get more of these
