Connecting to Vera Edge without an Internet connection.

I have searched for the answer to this but wiki is out of date and there must be a new procedure in place for Edge and higher.

Getting to Vera’s Setup Page without an internet connection
If Vera does not have an internet connection, then you must connect the computer with your web browser to one of Vera’s four LAN ports, or connect to Vera wirelessly using the network name (SSID) and password shown on the bottom of Vera and on on the front of the Quick Start Guide. Then open your web browser and go to: http://local.findvera.com
If that fails, try: http://192.168.81.1
Vera’s setup page should appear.

The above is for Vera 3, I need to connect to an Edge and the instructions in the wiki don’t work.
I think someone asked this a few months ago but again searching has proven fruitless.

TIA

Hey Zedrally

http://wiki.mios.com/index.php/How_to_reset_to_default_network_settings

See this link, but only the part where you connect veraedge locally.

eg:

By default Vera automatically configures its network, if you connect it to your router it will automatically connect to it’s network. If after plugging Vera into your network, you don’t see your Vera on cp.mios.com , please follow these steps to fix your networking:

Note: For Vera edge you’ll have to replace the 192.168.81.1 IP address with a combination of numbers based on the unit’s MAC address. Depending on which firmware version you’re on you’ll have to set it up like below:

MAC address: D4:21:22:FC:BC:9D

a. on firmware version 7.0.12.1 and older (1.7.1598 or older) the IP address Vera Edge can be accessed on will be generated using the last 4 digits in the mac address. For the example above it would be: 192.168.12.29

b. on firmware version newer than 7.0.12.1 (above 1.7.1598) the IP address Vera Edge can be accessed on will be generated using the last 4 characters of the mac address, where the letters are converted to numbers based on their order of the alphabet. For the example above it would be 192.168.23.94

This would mean that the PC should have an IP address in the same class as the unit, meaning 192.168.12.100 (for example) for case a. or 192.168.23.100 (for example) for case b.

Hi Soren, thanks for the reply, this allows me to connect to a wifi network, but I’m not seeing how this will allow me to connect Vera direct to a PC without a router.
For instance, I can see Vera broadcasting on the WiFi network but can’t connect to it directly (maybe I’m not meant to?) or am I trying to attempt the impossible?

If you connect it to your pc with ethernet, you have to be on the same subnet.
To find out the right subnet follow Sorins guide.

Why can’t you connect to its wifi?

Because it’s not broadcasting it’s SSID now.
I gone through all the combinations I can see to enable it to broadcast but can’t seem to crack it.

hmm… what happens if you connect Vera directly to your pc and try to access 192.168.91.41 ?
Of course change your pc ip first to like 192.168.91.100

And what happens if you manually try connect wirelessly to TLRAS + pwd?
the broadcast of ssid is not necessary as long as you know the ssid.

OK, with this unit as it is only going to be using 2 devices I decided to give the Beta FW a try.
This reset everything to a blank canvas and I have been able to connect to Vera but not log in and get a UI.
This is what I can see.

SSID: mios_xxxxxxxxxx
Protocol:802.11n
Security type:WPA2-Personal
Network band:2.4 GHz
Network channel:11
IPv6 DNS servers: fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1
fec0:0:0:ffff::2%1
fec0:0:0:ffff::3%1
Manufacturer:Intel Corporation
Description:Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 3160
Driver version:18.33.9.3
]Physical address (MAC):F4-06-69-71-6E-A7

If I understand Sorin & yourself correctly, if I log into the MAC then all should be well, but that now begs the question how do you convert the MAC into an IP?

IF I connect to Vera directly by ethernet then I get this:

IPv6 DNS servers:fec0:0:0:ffff::1%
fec0:0:0:ffff::2%1
fec0:0:0:ffff::3%1
Manufacturer:Realtek
Description:Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller
Driver version: 10.1.505.2015
[Physical address (MAC):D0-BF-9C-93-C1-EF

and still no connection.

Ok, your mac is F4-06-69-71-6E-A7

If 1.7.1598 or older fw: 192.168.71.67 (last four numbers of mac)

F4-06-69-71-6E-A7 (E=5th letter in the alphabet. A=1st)

so if newer fw than 1.7.1598: 192.168.65.17 last 4 letters (if a letter)converted to numbers

Hope you get it working.

Haven’t people said the Vera has a major design flaw whereby it does not start properly if it cannot see an NTP server to synchronise its clock with over the Internet? Would this be your problem?

And if not, how were you able to update the firmware if you can’t connect to the Vera?

Is that even possible?

^^^
This Vera has only 2 devices on it, it’s specific to this project and will not have any more, but I need to access the UI without a router.
In this case I wasn’t able to access the UI from the LAN, but could from the getvera loginas the controller was already registered.
This allowed me to access the UI and update the FW.

The rest of the jigsaw will need to wait till tomorrow, I appreciate everyone’s help on this but it’s getting frustrating as Vera is not behaving as it should.

Incidentally, why would Vera have 2 different MAC’s?

One mac is the ethernet card mac, the other is wireless card mac

So you wired mac is D0-BF-9C-93-C1-EF and ip for that is either 192.168.99.31 or 192.168.31.56

The wireless mac is F4-06-69-71-6E-A7 so the ip is either 192.168.71.67 or 192.168.65.17

I think I’ll just get a el cheapo router and problem solved.
Annoying really as there should be solution.

I believe you are correct, so I think I’m trying to push s**t uphill without a shovel in this case.

Wireless doesn’t connect. I get the following from the trouble shooter:

Ok, then it must be something with Vera, maybe it is the time thing like Tillsy said.

But Vera is advertised to work without an internet connection.
http://support.getvera.com/customer/en/portal/articles/2611282-what-if-i-don-t-have-internet-at-home-

Try a wired connection, change your pc ip address first to either 192.168.99.100 or 192.168.31.100
Leave the “gateway” option blank or put in veras ip
netmask is 255.255.255.0

Then i recommend you to look the result of following: (in this case leave your PC ip setting to automatic)
If you have a windows pc, open command prompt (CMD) and type in ipconfig
it should show you pc ip and veras ip.

(some browsers (ie) need the “http://” in front of the ip when you try to connect)

Good call thief that was to be my suggestion too - as maybe the Vera is somehow on a wrong subnet (though given it is a fresh install you wouldn’t imagine so), or perhaps due to the NTP issue the DHCP server hasn’t even started yet and thus your PC/Mac might have a self-assigned IP address and thus not seeing the Vera. Either way an ipconfig will show the story.

well here is the ipconfig.
I really have no idea where to go or what to do next so I’m in your hands.

 1. DISABLE YOUR WIFI CARD FIRST

 2. leave the IP setting in your pc to “automatic” or sometimes “from dhcp” (same thing)

 3. connect vera directly to you PC, no other connections.

3 .open up CMD again and type ipconfig /flushdns and hit enter
4. then type ipconfig /release and hit enter
5. then type ipconfig /renew and hit enter (wait awhile so it finishes)
6. type ipconfig again an post a pic here

zedrally,

It works the same either via wifi or ethernet, just make sure you use the correct mac mask rule, based on the connection type.
