Coby MID7024 Kyros Touchscreen Android 2.2

Have one on the way from Amazon, would like to run Home Buddy on it.

I assume it needs to be rooted in order to use Home Buddy?

Thanks!

can’t speak to that specific device- but android devices generally don’t need to be rooted to run 3rd party software.

If the device doesn’t have access to the android market (generally google witholds permission from ‘lower’ end devices like Coby) you would have trouble getting the current APK file to install. But as long as coby hasn’t futzed with android to disallow 3rd party apps you would be fine once you get your hands on the apk. As far as i can recall only ATT tweaks the firmware on their devices to outright block non-market apps without root.

might need to find a setting to allow non-market apps and figure out how to get a file manager installed to download and install the apk but generally shouldn’t be a problem.

please keep us posted.

I saw this thread : http://forum.micasaverde.com/index.php?topic=5857.0 where iflyM3 said he rooted his Coby MID7015, but don’t know if he had to root it to run Home Buddy or he rooted it “just cause”…

I only wanted to root the Coby 7015 because it was an older one running Android 2.1 so that meant no Browser Flash Support and it didn’t have access to the general Google Apps Market for me to download SkyFire, instead it came with a Chinese Version of the Market called AppsLib or some $h!t like that. Technically, I didn’t need to root it because I could have installed the apk file from a microSDHC card. However, I didn’t want to have to place files on the card to transfer to the tab. I’d much rather download them straight to the tablet and then install from there as that makes things more convenient. The Kyros 7015 has a slower processor clocked at 800Mhz, the 7024 has a faster 1Ghz processor. Yours will also have the AppsLib Market, you’ll need to root it in order to get access to the normal Google App Market from the tab itself.

You can try searching XDA for any information on rooting the 7024… I’m not sure if anyone has been successful, I’m sure somebody has been able to do it by now… Happy Rooting!

Thanks iflyM3!
Unfortunately, my MID7024 is defective- there’s no audio from the built-in speakers. When I plug headphones in- I have full audio from mp3’s, Youtube video’s, etc… as soon as I unplug the headphones- the audio should come from the built-in speakers… but it doesn’t. I have the HDMI Audio set to “off”, silent mode set to “off”, I have system volume to “full” and media volume to “full”… but nothing, not even system sounds from the speakers- only audio from plugged in headphones… so back it goes.

I’ll play with it for the weekend, so if I understand you correctly- without rooting it I should be able do DL Home Buddy to the SD card then install it from there?
The 7024 comes with a APK installer to install apps from SD.

Looks like the MID7024 has recently been rooted (http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/coby-generation-2-technical/12842-how-root-mid7024.html).

Just wondering if I should replace the defective MID7024 with the same tablet, or go for the Nook Color and root it?

Sry about yours being defective. That really blows.

My personal opinion is, if you can get the 160 - 180 bucks that you paid for the MID7024 back, might as well spend another 40 - 60 bucks and grab the Nook Color.
I went bottom dollar and snatched the 7015 for around 130, with the specs and everything that it offers its a good deal… considering the Nook Color is around 220 to 260. You do get what you pay for tho, the Nook Color is a lot better.

Yeah, maybe it was a blessing in disguise that the Coby was defective out of the box.
Just got the RMA email back from the Amazon seller- will be getting the full amt back because item is clearly defective and easy to prove.

After more research- decided to go for the Nook Color because it has more internal memory, larger battery, capacitive touchscreen rather than resistive touchscreen, known rooting procedures with recovery rom readily available, easy overclocking, etc… and I can pick it up on my way home from work at local BB!

FWIW- ran the html dashboard on the Coby tablet last night- kind of sucked!

Thanks again for your help iflyM3…
