I have not used anything like the Staples Connect since the X-10 days. Now, I am ready to jump in and get started and my first project is replacing a canopy fan module and remote which is working poorly. The biggest issue is a lack of choices and the prices. I do not mind paying $49 for the Staples Connect, but paying $99 for a fan switch when the fan cost $100 (got it on sale) does not add up. Am I looking in all the wrong places, please help?
Couple things.
This forum is for the Vera Home Automation controller. Any questions regarding the Staples Connect will need to be directed elsewhere.
Fan control, your options are limited. Even more so if you want speed control. For zwave your only option is the Leviton fan controller which is pricey. If you want to simply turn a fan on or off, you can use a standard relay switch. Do NOT in any circumstance use a dimmer to control a fan.
Another option is to go the Insteon route as there are FanLincs that control both fan and light. You’ll require a device that can control insteon devices.
Also take into consideration that home automation is still a small market and can get expensive and complicated. You also get what you pay for.

Oops, sorry about being in the incorrect forum. The best information I found on the net came from here, the forum banner said simple machines forum so I made a leap of faith. Getting which zwave products are compatible is difficult. Thanks for the information you provided.
