I just installed a kwikset 912 lever lock (not a deadbolt) and for some reason I can not get my Vera lite to recognize it. I have done a few searches and it seems the issue most others have is that they can not control the lock in the dashboard. I can not even get my lock to pair up.
I am using the battery operated method with the Vera lite and when I put it into pair mode and then press the zwave button on the lock, the Vera never responds to it. I have tried four separate times with no luck.
What is strange is that I have two kwikset deadbolts (for over a year) that I had no trouble pairing.
Anyone have this happen? How can I tell if it’s the Vera or the lock? It was a “new” open box item. Lock otherwise functions normally.
Thanks in advance for any help. I feel like a fool for not being able to accomplish something so simple.

First I recommend to never pair with batteries unless everything else fails, the world falls apart then install batteries and move the vera. If not it likes to sit in one place and not get confused where everything is during paring for routing and neighbors.
2nd at this point you might need to exclude the device first then try to include it.
Plug everything back in the normal spot open up the UI on a computer or web browser go to add device and watch everything happen as you go along with words rather then morse code of blinking lights.

Ok, so the downside is I’m going to have to remove the lock from the door and bring it into the room where the Vera is, but I’ll give it a try. FWIW I have never had an issue pairing any device with my Vera (I have approx 15 devices) until now. Like I said j feel dumb even posting this!!
I have also never had to exclude a device from my Vera before. How do I do that if it’s not showing up in my device list?
No leave the lock where it is! Z-wave travels far.
You don’t need to use the list of devices. You can always go to Generic z-wave device. The list is very short and half my devices are not even on that list. The results are the same if you click the device or use generic device.
Anyways in ui7 you go to generic z-wave device and click add once it trys if it doesn’t find it or during that count down anytime you can click try again which at the top you will see in blue it says exclude or remove device now.
Devices even if they not on your vera (especially a used device or a botched install) stores information from the last controller it was talking to. It will not pair with another until its removed or the info in the device is erased. Its different then it showing up on your vera UI. Just because its not on the UI doesn’t mean the device doesn’t have some controller information stored on it.
Example if your vera dies and never turns on again, your devices will not add to a new controller until they are excluded, or erased. That can be done from any vera not just the original. But the information is stored in the devices also not just in the vera. Make sense.
And ignore the 3ft rule.

Ok, good thought. I will try it that way and report back. I also should’ve mentioned in using IU5 not 7 if that matters.
So I am going to go to the add device screen and once the Vera is ready I should go try the inclusion process for the lock…? Should I try to exclude it first in case it’s corrupt or already programmed like you said? If so, how do I do it (if it’s not showing in my UI) ?

ui5 and ui7 only different is the menus. I’m on ui7. You can try to add first when or if it don’t work it will try to exclude you need to press the button in the top left corner of the lock both when you try and add and try to remove.

Just want to say thanks as this worked like a charm! All these years I’ve been pairing only in the battery mode but I just tried what you suggested and it worked. I put the Vera in pair mode on the PC and activated the learn button on the lock but it didn’t initially work. Then I clicked the button for "my device is not showing up. " and pressed the lock button again… Vera said “I was able to reset your device” - I’m guessing that was the exclusion process. After that, I pressed the lock button again and poof! There it is in Vera! The rest of the setup was easy and we’re good to go.
Thanks again for the suggestion!

Glad all worked out. Allows you to name the device on the spot and assign a room. Helps alot when you doing alot of devices at once.
Yes the reset is the exclusion process (it basically sends a command to the device to clear that device of previous installs, info) This is needed before any used device will be installed a botched installs would also leave stored info in the device.
What you did is called “FULL power inclusion” more info here but this was published in 2010 and its alot better now with all devices pretty much supporting it.

There might be some really far devices or certain special devices that just wont take without the vera being close. But for the most part 95% of your installs can be done like u just did. New edge doesn’t even come with batteries to move the device around. Only the Lite does.
That being said, should I still do a repair/heal after adding devices? Or if they’re working just leave well enough alone?
It’s un needed when you don’t move the vera around. It’s also un needed if you don;t have any communication errors (device is working fine).
Also by default if vera sees any communication errors it will automatically run a heel at 2am.
Heel’s can cause alot of problems with battery devices that stop responding after the heel is done due to sleep and wake up times.
It’s would be advised to never run a heel unless you have a device that is having trouble and you have to do a heel.
If you buy an open box item… ALWAYS assume that the unit (regardless of type - lock, sensors, etc) has previously been associated to a controller… Do an exclude first to remove old associations… Your install will go much smoother…
Specifically for the Kwikset/Weiser locks (deadbolt or lever)… The Z-Wave modules are all tested after manufacture, and the number that leave th test station without being excluded from the test controller is surprisingly high…
