Caddx to Vera security

I am reviewing my home network to identify ways to increase the security of my network.

I am planning to move my Veralite to a separate sub-net to keep it away from my LAN. However, within that sub-net, my Caddx Alarm system, my Veralite, and the internet, are all connected.

While I frequently use triggers from my Caddx alarm system in Scenes in my Veralite system, I will NEVER EVER want my Veralite to be able to Arm/Disarm/Change my Caddx alarm. Said another way, I want my Verlite to have READ ONLY access to my Caddx alarm system. I appreciate that using the Caddx plug-in, I still need to provide a PIN to arm/disarm my alarm system. However, I am concerned that this requires only a 4 digit PIN. Any automated attack coming in via the internet would not take long to get a 4 digit (or even 6 digit) PIN.

So… I would appreciate hearing your thoughts and ideas.

Is there some way to configure/change the Caddx plug-in to make it a Read Only interface to the Caddx alarm? Perhaps remove the section of LUUA code that traps and passes the PIN to the Caddx alarm?

I don’t remember, but is there a configuration setting on the Caddx alarm to go into alarm or lockout if more than a few invalid password attempts are made?

Thoughts?

You can do this by programming your NX-8 or NX-584 interface to disable the command “Primary keypad function with PIN”. With this option turned off, the alarm panel will simply refuse to accept any command that requires a PIN. The plugin will note your preference when it starts up and reject Arm/Disarm commands sent to the Vera.

This is explained on the plugin’s documentation page under “Preparing the alarm system interface”.

Quick Arm (without PIN) is controlled through a separate setting. Read the documentation for how to enable or disable that.

Thank you for this information.

I will update my NX-584 settings, as you have described.

Am a newby regarding Vera.

  1. I am still a little amazed that Zwave users (and vendors) are thinking that they can built a ‘real’ security system by configuring some motion sensors and door contacts …

  2. One of the solutions is to integrate a high quality security system with domotics

  • you are using/discussing the CADDX system
  • has any of you come across other options?
  • Mybe it is an European thing but I came across the Polish Satel-Integra system which has been integrated with the (also Polish) Fibaro Zwave-system; any experiences?
  1. To what extend do you want to integrate? Dmevis has quite strongly emphasized that he does not want to arm/disarm the alarm system from the Vera site; due to inadequate security (4 PIN).
  • but does that mean that you also don’t want to arm/disarm the alarm system with their proprietorty apps; which will mostly also be a PIN?
  • and that arming/disarming can only be done physically on location; either by PIN or tag?
  1. Enhancing the alarm system by triggering Zwave modules is sensible (DMevis indicates this as Readonly access)
