Smoked a FanLinc within the first hour of operation. The odd part is that it was working fine at first: I could change the fan speed and control the lights fine. I left it run for about an hour, went into the bedroom and it smelled like burnt electronics. Lost control of the FanLinc and had to kill power at the breaker. Removed the FanLinc, swapped in the original remote controller and it’s been working fine for a week now.
Should I send this back to the manufacturer as an RMA or should I just return it to Amazon for replacement?
I don’t like seeing that. I would contact smart home directly first. See if they want to reimburse you for return shipping and send you out a new unit. They can also help determine if there was any problem with your setup. Otherwise it’s easy to send back to amazon.
SmartLabs / SmartHome / Insteon are all the same company.
Technically, I think SmartLabs owns 2 child companies, Insteon and SmartHome.
SmartLabs owns the technology (http://www.smartlabsinc.com)
Insteon is the manufacturer of Insteon devices. (http://www.insteon.com)
SmartHome is the retailer that sells on the web (Insteon and a bunch of other junk!) (http://www.smarthome.com)
Thank for the info everyone. I’ve got a new unit on it’s way from SmartHome. I’ll get it swapped in as soon as it arrives. Hopefully this is a one-time occurrence (my other FanLinc has been working perfectly now for almost a month).
Just wanted to give everyone an update: I got the new FanLinc installed last week and it’s been working flawlessly for several hours (we sleep with the fan on low).
