Baby monitor

First baby is due soon. I don’t mind getting a proper baby monitor but I was wondering if any one has used Vera and an IP webcam (Foscam FI8918W??) for this purpose?

Some features might not be there, but more useful to invest in the fiscal than something that will be on eBay in a while.

Any thoughts?

I use several Foscam FI8918W’s with a Vera2 UI5. One of them is in my daughters room. This works pretty well, but no sound through the Vera2. The Foscam FI8918W’s embedded web interface does allow for sound, so that is also an option.

Hmmm, might not be justification for getting the webcam on that basis then. Shame.

Thanks for the help.

You’d probably want a dedicated device for the audio that is always on while baby is asleep and that guards the link between the parent unit and the nursery (i.e. it will let you know when the link is lost).

If you do end up getting a regular baby monitor just make sure it is 2.4Ghz or 5.8Ghz. A 900Mhz one will create havoc with your Z-Wave system.

2.4 Ghz may create havoc with WIFI setup!

We use a DECT based baby monitor (1.9 GHz). Appears to work well amidst WiFi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave, GSM, etc.

I’m very happy to be a first time mom and my baby’s nursery is on a different floor in my house. I’m looking for the best portable Baby monitor, possibly a picture one. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

I can’t help you with this Diane (I sure someone will!), but congrats with your baby!

This may be one of the best portable baby monitors: http://www.withings.com/en/babymonitor
Looks nice but very pricey.
Personally, I try to avoid placing any wireless device so close to a small baby for long durations, so I would pick a product that has a wired (ethernet) connection - the whitings seems to have one.

congrats.

having been thru about 3 different models, we currently have the Motorola MBP36.
Great range, big screen, good battery life, PTZ, etc.
Definitely the cadillac.
My wife loves it!!!

We have Angelcare monitor. We have had it for 3 years now and has monitored both our two children and will monitor the new baby when it arrives later in the year. Both of our children were very good and restful sleepers so we found the heart monitor especially useful when they are newborn and we were learning. The ability to quickly reference at a glance what is going on and the room temp was the one main thing my wife loved, it gives confidence they are safe and made her sleep more easy. I really do think it was great; especially, seeing you are up very often during the night at the start.

Our kids rooms are down the other end of the house and it works extremely well through brick walls and never missed a beat. Now we still have the monitor in their room and I was just up respond to one of their calls.

We did have dedicated video monitoring at the start but as we learned more, it wasn’t used as much and then not at all and when the cry were heard my wife or I were straight there in a heartbeat. We did not set up video for the second baby or will we for number three.

Looking to get the Motorola MBP33 Wireless Video Baby Monitor with Infrared Night Vision and Zoom 2.8" Color LCD.
It runs on 2.4 ghz fhss wireless technology.
Is the monitor something that I could link to the VeraLite?? It would be nice if the camera had some use after we don’t need it as a baby monitor.
Or would the baby monitor have to be z-wave compatible??

this won’t work with Vera. To work with Vera you either need something that’s Z-Wave or IP enabled.

I have found the best solution is using the Foscam 8910 (~$70) or 9821(~$120) in the baby room, these camera’s have 2 way audio, night vision and pan/tilt. Then get an app for your phone/tablet, I use LiveCams Pro ($3.99). You can use the cameras as motion sensors, I have mine setup to turn on a lamp next to the baby’s crib when it detects motion and turn back off in 20 minutes.

You will not get audio through Vera but that’s not the best place for it anyways. For your video you really want a dedicated Network Video Recorder or NVR. If you have a PC in your house you can get BlueIris for $50 to record not only on video motion but also on audio detection and send alerts to your phone.

Most baby monitors I’ve seen cost well over $100 and you have to be with a certain range for them to work. For less than $80 you can have one that you can monitor anywhere you have internet access with much better quality and features plus you can use later in the house when you don’t need it as a baby monitor anymore.

We actually would play the previous nights video at 16x speed of the baby sleeping to see how much he actually was sleeping vs moving around, it’s pretty funny to watch in fast forward.
