Automatically configure ?????

Good morning All,

In creating a new device, when does one use Automatically configure and when to use Default Behavior.

Thanks

Dom

The “Default behavior” option on the device tells Vera to use the global setting under Setup → Z-Wave → By default Vera should automatically configure devices. “By default Vera should automatically configure devices” is checked by default. This is getting confusing ::slight_smile:

When you use “Automatically configure: Use default behavior” on a device, it will do whatever is checked on the higher global setting, which when checked by default, automatically configures the device whenever there is a configuration change.

Very very rarely does this ever need to be different and if in doubt, don’t change the setting. Almost always, allow Vera to automatically configure the device.

The rare exception, where you will choose not to configure the device automatically, might be something like a special device with a secondary controller and Vera configures the device wiping settings established by the secondary controller. When manual routing was used, it may also have been preferable to disable automatic configuration in some case. But, I can’t think of a specific case where changing automatic configuration would be a good thing today.

As a rule of thumb, Vera’s defaults are appropriate in ~99% of cases.

Thanks Z-Waver.

I always found this section to be a bit tricky.

In other words when selected Automatically configure you choose Default Behavior.

or

Automatically configure you choose YES

Thanks

Dom

Choosing “Default Behavior” on the device, will do whatever the global setting is. By default the global setting is to configure devices.

Choosing “Yes” is a manual override. It means that the device will always be configured by Vera, even if the global setting is is unchecked.

Choosing “No” is the negative manual override. It means that Vera will NOT configure the device, regardless of the global setting.

As stated previously, you should probably NOT change the defaults. Defaults are “Default Behavior” on devices and “By default Vera should automatically configure devices” at the global level.

Clear as mud! ;D

Thanks Z-Waver, makes more sense.
