I have searched a few of the threads with lots of comparisons to the Kwikset and Schlage locks but I need to know about sheer size before I drop $500 on the new lever and deadbolt system.
My problem is that the Schlage lever I purchased during Radio Shack days is TOO LARGE for me to also have the deadbolt installed. The footprint takes up too much space at the top where the deadbolt gets installed. I could fix this by redrilling the deadbolt or handle but since I am looking to purchase another handle, I figured it was worth questioning.
Does anyone have both and care to comment on the footprint of each?
I believe they are both about the same size. I have a Kwikset lever and it obstructed the deadbolt as well.
I would suggest just getting the deadbolts and stick with standard levers…
If you end up wanting to drill a new hole for the lock, I just got one of the kits from Home Depot for $10-$15 with the hole saws and drilled my new hole, then used the plug I drilled out to put in the old hole. A bit of wood glue, putty, and a screw going through the plug from the door edge and you can’t even see it after paint.
I concur with TheGadgetGuy - I replaced all 4 exterior door deadbolts with the Kwikset Z-wave models and replaced the keylock handle or lever with a non-locking version…
Another option is to replace one lock (I did front door) with the Kwikset z-wave lock, and the rest of the doors with the keyless Kwikset lock that isn’t z-wave. They look the same, have the same motorized mechanics, just not z-wave and less than half the cost. I just decided that I wouldn’t really need z-wave on all the doors. I have all of the locks set to auto-lock after 30 seconds. Also, literally in less just a few seconds they can be keyed the same so that the same set of keys works all of the locks (assuming you will ever need the key). I have them all set to the same code. Saved about $125 per lock for the non z-wave lock. With the auto-lock feature enabled, I didn’t see a need to remotely control more than one lock.
Great info guys! Due to my “Needing” the front door to be ALL Zwave, I currently only have the lever on the front door with the deadbolt as a dummy. I am a believer in the whole “if they want to get in they always will” and a deadbolt is 3 kicks compared to 1 but needless to say the wife doesn’t feel safe with just a lever, door sensor, motion detector (and me offering a camera installed)… and must have the deadbolt.
I think I will go with the Kwikset Deadbolt and just a non-locking handle. Hopefully that will be suffice.
I encountered this installing the Kwikset lever this past weekend. However, I found that you can invert the interior side of the Kwikset and it works fine for my setup. The interior piece sits higher than the exterior keypad and was pushing up into the deadbolt hole. Inverting the interior piece seems to look fine (based on wife’s opinion which is really what counts in my house).
