Wondering if anyone has tried this yet:

Certainly well beyond my scope of knowledge to make this device work, just wondering if anyone else has been successful.

This works on the same zwave frequency but does not implement the zwave protocol. To make it work you’d need to implement all the zwave protocol which is not public. I think there are a few projects that try to do this but they are far from complete.

So, could one ‘sniff’ out the protocol with this unit?

I know I def couldn’t, but I know there are many here that could…
