Apple Wants to bring order to the scattered Home Automation Universe

So, yesterday ay their annual developer conference Apple announced Homekit http://www.tuaw.com/2014/06/02/wwdc-2014-home-kit-brings-smart-home-services-under-one-app/ . THis is Apple’s attempt to corral the various Home Automation protocols under one tent and provide a single software solution to talk across all borders.

So Veranauts, what do you think about this?

The conversation has already been going on since yesterday, check out this thread http://forum.micasaverde.com/index.php/topic,25363.msg178995.html

Since this thread is more about apple and not about the final nail in the coffin for MCV, I’ll put my thoughts here as well.

Basically put, if Apple doesn’t make this “single software solution” open, I have no need for it. I don’t need to be trapped by an ecosystem so that everything works great, but only if I buy from 1 company. This seems to be Apple’s methodology the past few years. I’ve seen many technologies that they “created” that could have been better served enhancing existing standards (AirPlay and DLNA for instance).

WebKit was like this and I wish they would go back into that direction.

I agree, it’s the same reason why when I was interested in a smartwatch the galaxy gear was automatically off my list.

Exactly. I was like “awesome!!! I’m so gonna get one!!.. Wait?!? it will only work with Samsung phones…No thanks!”

Thank goodness too, cause I can’t wait for some Moto360

I have been very happy with my Pebble overall but I can’t wait for them to show off more of what the Moto360 can do.
