So I am admittedly new to Zwave, and Vera, but darn it… I can read!
I got a Schlage Link deadbolt for my new house (first thing you do… replace all the locks!)
Shortly there after, I bought Vera, seeing as though there is that special going on and I want to automate the new home, and the schlage bridge seemed to suck eggs when it came to actual functionality. So last night, I get the hankering to finally hook up Vera (after weeks of drywall work and painting… time for something new!) So I get Vera plugged in, get to start adding devices… and since the Link is the only ZWave device I have installed so far (outlets and switches have not been installed yet), it was the prime candidate to be item #1.
SO I put the USB Dongle in enrollment mode (slow blinking light) and then punch in the schlage code, then the schlage button and then the number 0. The USB stick blinks quickly, and the lock keeps blinking orange. So according to the bottom of page 2 here: http://part2.schlage.com/docs/manual_lock_programming-beta.pdf , I just successfully programmed the lock.
So I go back to Vera, plug the dongle in, wait 30 seconds and my lock appears. I am thinking SWEET! That was easy. Then the inevitable happens. The lock doesn’t respond to Vera’s commands, I spend 30 minutes where I reset everything, exclude the lock and repeatedly try again until I am ready to spit nails and curse for the next hour @1 AM until I am so damn frustrated I finally say “frak it… I give up!” :-X >:(
Anyone got this damn thing to work? What am I doing wrong? ???
I remember seeing a red cog, a blue switch switching up and down that eventually went red and what looked like a power button that I believe rotated. I’ll get you the details after I get home tonight and start round two.
How far away from the lock are you? You might want to try putting an zwave outlet somewhere between the lock and vera just to extend your zwave network.
Doc,
I went through the same ordeal last weekend. You actually have to keep the dongle plugged into Vera when you sync. You will most likely also have to reset the lock. It is all described here:
Then all is well! I guess I expected the bolt to move, actually unlocking the door. Oh well. Reduces the cool factor by 25% IMO, but still a noteworthy function.
Thank you all for your help! Now, on to the kitchen!
Ok, I just connected my Schlage LiNK deadbolt to my new Vera system – my first Z-Wave connection ever. It was harder than it should have been, but now that I know what it entailed, these directions should make it more simple than trying to read the terrible PDF documentation of Schlage, and the un-uniformed way you have to get them talking together:
Quick steps (reasons why below):
Keep the USB doggle plugged into Vera. You can’t connect Schlage if they are disconnected.
Move the Vera and Schlage close to each other.
Hold the red bottom down on the back of Vera while clicking the black button once.
Type in the 6-digit code found in your Schlage package receipt into the Schlage keypad. Then hit the “SCHLAGE” button and the number “0”.
Hold the black button on the back of the Vera and press the red button (don’t hit the back button twice in a row or you’ll reset it).
Type in the 6-digit code into the Schlage keypad followed by “Schlage” and “0” buttons again.
If it works, the Schlage button will blink green.
Explanation:
Apparently the Schlage doesn’t communicate with the USB doggle when disconnected from Vera (bandwidth issues?) so it needs to be plugged in.
The distance should be close so it’s not a factor in your trial and error.
3-4) This un-links the Vera from the Schlage – just as a precaution. I had to do this even though neither units had ever been used. The Schlage blinks green if it needed to be un-linked as was successful.
5-6) This links the Vera to the Schlage. It also makes the Schlage blink green if it linked properly.
If you do the steps in this order, you most likely won’t have to worry about trying to configure first, and then realizing you need to reset settings and un-link items, etc… It’s just more straight forward and simple.
Two things for people who haven’t purchased:
When I click “lock” or “unlock” on the FindVera website controls, it takes a good 10+ seconds for the lock to actually respond to the commend.
The Schlage deadbolt isn’t actually motorized. This means you can’t drive home, click “unlock” using your RF garage door opener, grab groceries out of the truck and walk up to the door and push it open. You still will need to manually turn the deadbolt. It simply activates the “grip” on the deadbolt.
The ZWave USB dongle needs to be attached to Vera because the communications between the Schlage and Vera are ENCRYPTED… so as to not allow your communications between your physical security measures and your automation (Vera) devices to be compromised as easily as other devices in your network. The dongle alone can be used to unregister (dis-associate, remove, whatever…) the lock from the ZWave network, but the dongle needs to be connected to Vera in order to set up the encryption that needs to be in place in order to operate / automate the lock functionality.
There is another way to pair/include the lock to vera
under the device tab choose : -Zwave options
choose:
include -one node-any tpye-normal power- then press go
when you are ready to pair the lock press go.
enter the security key,
press the schlage button after it glows solid
then press the 0 button . it will take at least 5 seconds an the schlage button will turn green and you will hear a success tone.
If you get anything other than green light on the lock it did not pair correctly.
Once paired it can take a few minutes to configure and learn all the empty codes.
Be patient. you can check the logs of vera for confrimation.
I can’t get my Schlage lock to pair, I’ve tried everything and even managed to reset the Vera due to this red and black button pushing and the directions not being clear.
I’ve also tried to do the reset, that doesn’t work either. I’ve got all other modules and a 3-in-1 motion sensor working but the lock won’t cooperate. Every time I try to pair it, it accepts the code, the SCHALGE light turns orange, I hit that once and then “0” and it then beeps 5-6 times in red, never any green flashes

UPDATE: I figured it out. The instructions on the SCHLAGE door lock page (http://wiki.micasaverde.com/index.php/Schlage_Lock) are poorly written. I found this info below and once I read these and tried it, it worked first time. I did have to reset the device, but anything less than these directions should be ignored.
ADDING/INCLUDING DOOR LOCK (I had to perform a reset below first)
Hold down black button and tap red = Add ZWave device: Press and hold the black button. While it is held down, tap and release the red button. Then let go. Be careful not to hit the black (reset) button twice in a row, as this will reset the router to the factory default configuration. Vera’s power light on the front will starting to blink slow and steady, about 1 time per second. This means Vera is ready to add another device. Vera will stay in this mode for 60 seconds, after which time the power light will return to normal. Each time you successfully add a device, the power light will flutter for 2 seconds to let you know it was successfully added. When you are done adding devices, you can either wait until the 60 second timeout when the power light returns to normal, or tap the black button once to stop the ‘add mode’. Once you stop the ‘add mode’, or it times out, wait 10 seconds before disconnecting Vera’s power.
RESETTING DOOR LOCK (I had to do this BEFORE it added)
Hold down red button and tap black = Remove ZWave device: Press and hold the red button. While it is held down, tap and release the black button. Then let go. Vera’s power light on the front will starting to blink fast and steady, about 3 times per second. This means Vera is ready to remove, or reset a device. See Reset_Node for an explanation of this. Vera will stay in this mode for 60 seconds, after which time the power light will return to normal. Each time you successfully remove a device, the power light will flutter for 2 seconds to let you know it was successfully reset. When you are done reseting devices, you can either wait until the 60 second timeout when the power light returns to normal, or tap the black button once to stop the ‘reset mode’. Once you stop the ‘reset mode’, or it times out, wait 10 seconds before disconnecting Vera’s power.
