I will be moving shortly and want to use a Vera3 to automate my home, including security.
Basically, I am looking to replicate the functionality of the usual automation services offered by Vivint, Frontpoint, etc. – have the lights turn on when the security system is disengaged, turn down the thermostat when it is engaged, etc.
I understand that this is possible with the Vera3, but I want to also add central station monitoring. Is this possible?
From my reading, it seems like once you use monitoring, you lose control of the security panel. True?
Thanks!
Not true. At least not for me.
I have a 3rd party monitored alarm system via telephone landline and GSM modem call out capabilities. Its a commerical system installed by a prior owner (Ademco Vista 50P).
I added the AD2USB this past weekend to the system on my own. I didn’t want to replace the monitoring just make the system able to be turned on and off remotely. Also I added a trigger to the code entry of my garage deadbolt. When you enter the correct code at the deadbolt keypad the deadbolt unlocks and then the alarm is automatically disarmed saving a second keyboard step inside the door.
I am doing exactly what you describe - Central monitoring , Vista 20p, with AD2USB connected to Vera3
I have full monitoring, alarm notifications, remote control via the monitoring service + use Vera to use sensors to do things like turn off HVAC if windows are opened as well as usual stuff like fountain, lighting control.
Made a specific choice to NOT control my alarm system from vera - so vera monitors the alarm system, takes actions based on things happening (system disarmed, system goes into alarm etc.) but I continue to use the monitoring system web page to remotely set/ disable the alarm.
As long as you know your installer code for your panel (I just asked my tech - yes it was the default) you should have no issues.
