Any reason to get the Vera 3 over the veralite if I don't need 200 devices?

I don’t need the router function either. I like to keep my network devices separate. What’s the purpose of having a faster unit? Does things happen faster or anything?

Consdering the price different is quite significant. the veralite comes with a lamp switch and a camera which while the vera 3 comes only with the device itself and the price is roughly $30 difference. Adding the lamp module the price is about $60 difference.

The Vera3 is not faster than the VeraLite but it does have double the memory. This is important if you want to be able to use a good selection of the fine plugins that are available in the App Store.

It is the wide range of available plugins that make Vera a useful HA system (IMHO) but it is all too easy to overload the memory of a VeraLite by installing too many. The result is an unstable and/or unreliable system.

Have you seen the deal on Vera3 at Amazon? http://forum.micasaverde.com/index.php/topic,27155.0.html

How hard is it to transfer settings and devices between the Veralite and Vera 3 if it’s even possible

Step 1 : Backup your Z-wave network on your Veralite (Vera Dashboard → Setup → Backup)
Step 2: Once completed download that backup from the server to your computer
Step 3: Restore that backup onto your Vera 3.

Caveats:
a) Make sure both Vera’s run the same firmware version
b) the restore will put the root password (shown on the bottom of Vera) of the VeraLite on the Vera3. You will have to SSH into the Vera3 and reset it to the one on the bottom of your Vera 3 if you want that password to match.

Changing Root password.
Use eg PuTTY (Download PuTTY: latest release (0.78)) to open up an SSH (port 22) connection to your Vera (You will need to know it’s IP address)

  1. Login with user id root and the password that is on the bottom of your Vera (or the Vera you restored the backup from)
  2. You will be presented with a prompt. Type passwd and then press the Enter key
  3. You’ll be prompted for the old password. Enter it and press the Enter key
  4. You’ll be prompted for the new password. Type the one on the bottom of your new Vera and press enter
  5. You’ll be prompted to confirm that new password by typing it again. do so and press the Enter key.
  6. Your password has been changed. type exit and press the Enter key to close the SSH session.
  7. Go to step 1 and login using the new password.
If successfully logged in, type exit and press the Enter key to close the session. You are done.
If you can’t login, use the old password instead. If that works, start again from step 2.

Caveat: The above user ID, password and command (in bold) are case sensitive.

This is how I upgraded my Vera 2 to my Vera 3 a while back

Awesome, sounds pretty painless, hopefully my experience with Amazon will be the same “painless”

It seems Amazon has increased the price to $162.82 now but the gift card deal is still valid.

I actually placed an order for the Vera3 on Amazon deal but cancel for the Veralite bundle deal from Tigerdirect. Just making sure I’m not making a mistake.

I saw that deal as well.

My 2 con’s on it were firstly it being TigerDirect and secondly a MailInRebate being involved. I’ve had to deal with TD and MIR’s before and it’s not been pretty. Also be very careful with TD if you pay with Paypal as they set themselves up as a trusted merchant and can pull money from your account very easily. (AngiesList does the same). You can deactivate that by logging into PayPal. Go to ‘My Paypal’, then Profile (cogwheel) and then under Payment settings click ‘pre approved payments’. If you see any active ones you don not like, do deactivate them.

On the plus side, depending on the kit, you get either a module and a thermostat or a module and a camera. I’ve got plenty of each already. Had it been the only deal, I would have gone for it.

Differences between the Vera 3 and the Veralite G in the TD package are 2.

  1. Vera3 has a Wifi router built in and 4 ethernet ports. Veralite does not.
  2. Vera3 has double the internal memory of the Veralite. Which matters is you intend to run a number of plugins etc.

Both are good deals if you are starting out. If you need that camera or thermostat, the TD deal might be more productive for you.

I don’t care for the camera which I’ll sell back on ebay. seems to go for about $50 to pay for a thermostat.
