Any guidance?

I just purchased my vera 2 (Its in the mail) and am going to build a security system out of this.

I bought 3 motion sensors so far.

I am going to purchase a siren, and already have 4 cameras round my house (zmodo)

I want to be able to use this setup as a security system such that if between say 9a-5p if there’s motion in the house sound siren text me and turn on all lights. That is doable with vera 2 right?

Now what about disabling the system say for when my son comes home? Aside from walking in going on the computer and doing it what is another way?

Thanks in advance

Buy the Schlage Lever Lock or Dead bolt (KwikSet now in the game too) and have it disarm when the pin code is entered. I would suggest you also turn on a light for a minute or two with the same event as a visual queue to assure your son that the thing has worked.

I don’t necessarily want to change my locks though. Is there anything where I can have a keypad like a car alarm?

Might be possible with either the first or second link, when used in conjunction with the gateway (last link)

Cheapest option is to find the $10 GE duplex receptacle at Radio Shack and install it at the nearest plug outlet to the door. It has an on/off button that can be used to launch a scene to disable your make-shift alarm.

Yes, that would work. (Plus you get to kick off the scenes through Homelink buttons in your car, if you have those.)

Will this : http://www.asihome.com/ASIshop/product_info.php?cPath=564_572&products_id=3850

work with the vera 2? Would I be able to just get a few of those key chain remotes and press the button have a sequence where you push that to deactivate the “alarm”? Or does that interface with something else that would interface with the vera 2?

No it won’t work with Vera. I have one and the only way to work this is to also have the garage door module and the WD Home Gateway set up as a seconndary z-wave controller. The frequency of the key fob remote is not Z-Wave compatible, I wish it were too.

If I get the wayne dalton gateway, do I have to get the wayne dalton keychain remote? Can I have the gateway learn from a different remote transmitter I have? Or does it ONLY work with the wayne dalton keychain remote?

Same question for a wireless keypad I already have for my garage door opener which is not a wayne dalton.

Also does anyone know of an affordable plug in siren? One that I can use to plug in to a lamp module?

I saw this one but don’t wanna pay $50 for a siren:

If you have a Homelink or Car2U remote, it should work with the gateway, I’d imagine. (Unless the gateway can tell the difference between codes sent by a remote and in-vehicle buttons.)

Not a bad idea, but do keep this in mind. All security systems for example DSC, have a battery backup that powers all of it’s equipment in case of power failure (either do to hardwired or wireless). This is possible in your case, providing you have a battery backup (UPS) on Vera & all needed equipment or have an automatic generator that kicks on even when no one is home.

For security, I would run an alarm system & tie it into Vera. That’s what I have & so do others here. Another thought, you loose power your modem goes down and forget about Vera alerting you or anyone else for that matter.

I have redundant backups. Everything that is vital is connected to a UPS including Vera, cable modem, switches, & routers. Granted it won’t run forever, but I am safe guarded for a while.

If you are tech savy, you can pickup a DSC hardwired for little cost. You can go wireless, just will cost a little more. Even better, you can go hybrid using both hardwired & wireless.

hey Computerjohn,

That is what I would PREFER to do but haven’t found which alarm system would tie into vera. I take it you have a DSC?

I’m going to search around for DSC now see what I can dig up, but if you wouldn’t mind sharing what system your using would be much appreciated.

EDIT
I don’t see the DSC has Z wave built in; how do you interface the DSC with z wave? Is there a module out there I am unaware of?

Thank you.

You would need the two items below along with a $20-30 USB to serial adapter, or a WIZnet Ethernet to IP adapter will get you a basic system that can be expanded on; but basically any Power series panel such as the 1816, 1832 or 1864.

Total cost for the above is about $300

Hey Strangely, thanks for the GREAT info! What will be the interface from the DSC to the vera?

Well the IT-100 (second link in my previous post) gives the panel the RS232 connectivity.

For Vera depending your panel or vera location you will need either one of the following for Vera to communicate with the IT-100:

http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9476

The advantage of this is that you can use Ethernet to link it over a greater distance.

If however you can get your Vera near where the Alarm Panel will mount, then you could use one of these directly plugged into a Vera USB port:

http://www.futureelectronics.com/en/technologies/interconnect/usb-to-ttl-rs232-rs422-rs485-cables/Pages/2297802-UC232R-10.aspx

RS232 will actually work over a reasonably long cable anyway, and so it doesn’t have to be real close!

By the way, for the DSC questions, you should post in the other thread I listed, and also read from the beginning as most of the answers are there.

I agree. They have great pricing. I do have a DSC, IT-100 interface & use the WIZnet ethernet module to connect my alarm to my network & Vera connects to that. It works perfectly, except remote access to via a smartphone is not possible at this time, but is being worked on.

Hi NewBee looking at the following Equipment for Home Automation and Integration of Security into Vera 3 Controller.

Do you have a model # for the WIZnet Serial to Ethernet Controller?
Does this go into the DSC Panel?

I understand that the New PTK5507 Touchscreen will work with the 1832 Power Series Panel

Vera 3
DSC Power Series 1832
DSC Wireless Receiver Module
DSC IT-100 Integration Module
PTK5507 Touch Screen

Serial to Ethernet Converter – WIZnet

Welcome @Stephenscott,

The WIZnet you need is WIZ110SR which is listed on the Wiki here:
http://code.mios.com/trac/mios_dscalarmpanel

Also if you want to take a look at the main alarm thread for this it details setup etc. If you want to fit the WIZnet in the panel, then you also need to make sure you have a way to power it as it requires 5VDC via either a wall wart, or something to convert the panel voltage of 12V down to 5V.

Also rather than the IT100, you may want to consider 2DS module instead; there are some short term issues with this currently, but they should get resolved soon!
