I have 2 Android tablets to display security cameras and use them as remote for Vera (Authomation). They are permanently plugged in (They turn on the charger when they reach 20% battery). One of the tablets is a Tesco Hudl. When the charger is on and the screen is on displaying my security camera (i use tinycam monitor) it still slowly charges the tablet which is fine. But on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 (screen size 8.0) with the same setup (I tries the original Samsung charger and a iPad charger), with a battery starting at 100% and the charger turned on, having tinycam monitor displaying my camera, after about 4 hours i only have 50% battery left. The Tesco Hudl screen is a little small, so i would like to have a bigger tablet, but the problem seems to be they need more power than the charger can deliver ?
Is there another charger i coulduse (The iPad one has 2.1 amps already), or a better tablet for the purpose ?
Interesting. Have you tried an auto brightness adjustment or lowered screen brightness? Is the cables are stock the only thing you can check is to make sure your device supports something that allows higher amperage.
If you’re familiar with Tasker I would suggest a profile of dim screen during away hours and increase brightness when you are home. Sounds the the tablets aren’t efficient with power. But the galaxy tab is new and popular so odd it would behave that way.
I have an s3 phone as a live streaming camera been on for months and I connect it with vera. No battery issues that I have seen.

I have the same problem with several N7 tablets I have installed. I am currently using 2amp chargers now and they will not charge when the screen is on at any brightness. The wire run is approximately 50 feet with a 4 conductor 22 gauge wire stranded.
I think I will try to increase the conductors and use solid core wire and see if that will increase the amperage at the tablet.
I use tasker to turn the tablets off while we are away and at night. I have tried different cables as well which made no difference. Actually I had the impression the stock cable was worse than the 2m long cable I bought on Ebay and I am using now. I’ll try dimming the screen a little to see if it makes a difference.
Tasker is not an option for me as I want the tablets on 24/ because they use the camera to light up when someone walks up to them and they are programmed to go to a certain page if any security issues are triggered during the night thus no touch needed.
I am going to have to find a way to charge them with long distances from the charger or bring the 110 outlet behind the tablet and use the stock charger.
You might still be able to use tasker. I have another setting in tasker, wheer the tablets only come on when triggered by one of my Vera motion sensors, so that is possible if that helps you
Thanks, I will look into that setting. I bought Tasker a while ago for my car mounted N7. But to be honest, I haven’t looked at it much. Especially lately.
That is wierd.
I have a 10" cheap chinese tablet with a 1A charger, always on ( and always charging) …no issues. Imperihome is always displayed with 2 cameras and full brightness.
My Samsung Tablet 8" was on trial with these settings, and also no issues with the standard charger.
Something else must be going on .
Good luck,
Cor
I was surprised and if i use my iPad watching video with teh charger plugged in, it still charges. I am now testing anotehr charger on another original Samsung cable. But maybe its the battery of the tablet i am wondering. I bought it reconditioned. Maybe there is a fault somewhere
Tested with original cable and charger, and it is charging even when using. So the problem seems to be the cheap 2m cable i bought of Ebay… So i need a 1.5m Samsung compatible cable i think…

When you plug most tablets into a charger, they attempt to negotiate an appropriate charging current. This works fine if you are using the manufacturers supplied/approved charger but can easily fail when using other chargers. It is also possible that some cables could prevent it happening. If negotiation fails, the tablet will probably fall back to pulling the 500mA that any USB should be able to provide.
Have you tried the original charger with a standard USB extension cable?
That’s is exactly what I come to think. I am trying to buy a genuine Samsung cable now with my required length. From what I read Samsung do not use standard cables, something about shorter pins or something like that, and if you use a standard cable it falls back to the 500mA as you said.
This might be slightly OT, but
I have this problem with a Car charger, I thought it was the cable, swapped it with a Samsung Cable and no go.
Oddly works well with a HTC using either cable,
If you find the solution for the Tab, then I can (hopefully) use it on the Car…
The original Samsung 1.5m cable solved the problem. Now while displaying my camera, it is charging. So the cable was the problem. My first delight about that did not last long though as I realised the cable is too short… So bought a original 2m Samsung cable… lesson learnt, don’t be a cheapskate…
