Alternatives to Lutron Grafik Eye

I’ll preface this by saying I’m extremely new to home automation. Veralite is in the mail right now.

I have two GRX-3104 units in a house I just bought, and I’m looking for zwave alternatives for these

It’s a 4-zone scene controller

What sort of switches would I replace this with to get independent dimming of all 4 zones? I’m pretty sure the lights are low voltage halogens.

Your current question and any future questions are a search away. Many new comings ask the same question many times over the a search can save you from creating a new one. You might want to have a look into the Leviton Zone Controllers.

If I may ask; why are you looking for replacements to these units?

They seem like very high-end controllers that appear to do what Vera would.

I’m having trouble understanding which kind of modules I would need to buy. If I remove this existing scene controller I do not have any switches or dimmers for the lamps. The leviton zwave scene controllers would have nothing to interface with.

Would I need to get a separate zwave dimmer for each set of lamps then use a scene controller?
Can I use in-wall zwave modules without existing switches? Can I link multiple in-wall modules to a single physical switch for local control?

The Grafik Eye also supports IR, and one of the units I want to control is in the room where media center is going to be. Would a SQ Blaster w/ a high powered external flasher be better than trying to replace with zwave?

I want to be able to integrate them with Vera.

There appears to be an RS232 module that is in excess of $400.
The systems use a proprietary interface to extend and control the units from remotely
They have an IR receiver on the front but no place to mount a led emitter for it that isn’t a huge eyesore (the newer units have direct connect from an IR blaster on the back but unfortunately mine are the original).

So I like the units, but I don’t see a cost effective and reliable way to integrate them.

Check out the ViziaRF+ line of Zwave devices. They offer some wall controllers which have IR control capability built into them.

I think I’m going to try a bare bulb IR emitter hidden under the front face plate on top of the receiver and see how well it works.

Thanks for the input!
