AllJoyn -- The Internet of Things and Vera?

AllJoyn is a system that allows devices to advertise and share their abilities with other devices around them. Has anyone thought of adding AllJoyn code to enable Vera to talk to other devices over Wi-Fi and maybe Ethernet? Potential devices that will come on board are TV’s, stereos, refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers, washers, dryers, lamps, lighting, cars, etc.

Later as new transport options are added to Vera, devices that talk BLE (Bluetooth 4.0+), Zigbee, etc. that are AllJoyn compatible could be controlled by Vera.

Here is a good overview video of AllJoyn: http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/WinHEC/2015/IOT200

Here is a list of devices that are AllJoyn compatible (so far):

Please do not double post. It is frowned upon by many on this forum.

You put a bit of effort into your posts about AllJoyn and I wrote an entire page discussing the merits of this and other similar protocols, old and new. Not to mention Microsoft’s embracing of this open source framework(warning) and the tangential similarity to Apple’s HomeKit framework. Then I deleted it all because it doesn’t really matter.

I can tell you that there aren’t nearly enough products, advantages/benefits, or demand for this protocol to be included in Vera by Vera Ltd. It’s just not going to happen.

However, one of the great things about Vera is its extensibility. With some LUA programming, plugins can be created to incorporate different products and communication protocols, such as this AllJoyn. If AllJoyn becomes a thing, something I highly doubt, then it is likely that someone will have a need and write a Vera plugin for it.

If you have one of the few existing AllJoyn receivers and were hoping for Vera support, sorry. Time to teach yourself LUA.

Could not have said it better. …

@garrettwp … sorry for double posting. I suppose I should have simply edited the previous post and added the other two comments to the first.

@Z-Waver … I was not expecting anything from Vera by Vera Ltd. To me, it looks like they just want to sell working hardware without investing anything else into Vera from here.

How much room is there to write a plug-in that will talk AllJoyn to other devices?

I can’t answer your question with anything empirical. Based on previous plugins, I would say that there was enough space for older Veras and ample space in the new Vera Edge.

This would be a bridge plugin … very similar to the RfxTrx or any of the Alarm plugins.

Memory is the limiting factor for most users … These bridge plugins use the memory closer to a single plugin … the memory use for ALL of the devices they serve up is fairly small.
