I think this system is no good. I think disagreements and differences are a part of life that can be handled in an adult fashion. This karma system gives people a brand that is shown on every post they make. And since I don’t see as much disagreement in conversation here on the forum as I do negative karma accumulation I’m assuming that people are using the feature in a passive aggressive manner.

The point of this poll is to provide some statistics to the forum panjandrums letting them know that the community doesn’t like this karma nonsense and they should whack the feature.

I agree with you that the karma system has not/will not help in its intended purpose to control spammers. But, I don’t see any point worrying about Karma. Screw 'em!

Of course I personally have the same thoughts. The issue is two fold. First while you and I are of like mind, many other people aren’t apparently. Some people are taking their negative karma points quite seriously. Second, people who come to the forum occasionally, or for their first time, may not have the same frame of reference that you and I do and their judgements of a persons posts may be hindered by negative karma.

After half a century on this earth you finally realize it doesn’t matter what total strangers think of you. I try to do the right thing everyday, but there are some people who are insecure and won’t like what I have to say. As long as I know in my heart that I wasn’t trying to be malicious/vindictive on purpose, then I’m doing ok. And if I accidentally offend/hurt those that I respect, then I will apologize.

The Internet and anonymous rating systems just gives a voice to the haters in the world. Let them have their fun, it won’t change their situation and they’ll still have to live with themselves.

Which in retrospect, was a little over zeolaous so I think karma helped out there.

The other ones tend to flare up when I advocate for some MS Windows components over Linux/Android/Open Source…or maybe cuz I’m a bad spellr for this hobby boord.

No one hangs out in this forum and puts up over 500, 1000, or even a few thousand posts with the intention to hurt folks or give them bad direction, even if they do get overzealous from time to time ;).

Tenure and activity seem a reasonable basis of judging someone’s credibility. The sticktoitiveness of the more senior members of this forum, their eagerness to assist and their eagerness to adapt with their mistakes is what helped me and a lot of others… not their karma points.

That being said, I’ll probably get another 10 negatives for this post.

Seeing that I only have +1/0 ratio (as of writing this) you wouldn’t know I have been here for nearly 5 years learning, teaching, helping, etc. I just ignore it since for years before it was the total number of posts that was a good indicator of how much you contributed. I mean, I am still going to listen to someone who has a -432 Karma rating. I gather enough information from every source possible, until I am satisfied, and then form my own opinion. So a rating system doesn’t really do anything.

I agree with TC1. I dont cry in bed at night over +1/-4 but I am curious where/why I got the -, i dont mean to offend anyone.

I guess I’m in the minority here, but I think they serve a purpose and do carry some value.

I’m very new to HA and Vera, and honestly wouldn’t have chosen this controller if it wasn’t for the strength of the forum community. Every purchase and decision I make regarding the build of my system weighs heavily on the knowledge and experience of the people here. For the people at the top that provide all this experience and knowledge, it may not be as important to you, but looking up from the bottom of the pile, I believe there is some worth.

I live in Canada, where ‘free shipping’ is a mythical creature spoken about by people in the US. I have finally found a site that offers free shipping, IF you buy $500 worth. This makes mistakes expensive. Oh, and they also charge a 15% restocking fee if you send something back. Oh, and wait, some of the product lines aren’t available up here, making cross border purchases necessary, which is never cheap, because the mythical Free Shipping Fairy residing at the US sites hops a plane to Costa Rica as soon as she sees a Canadian address. No big box store in Canada carries any Z wave products, which really doesn’t matter because I’m over 100 miles to the nearest one anyway!

I have only dished out one +1 Karma point in my long illustrious 20+ post tenure here at the MCV forum, but I feel it was warranted. A member took a considerable part of his weekend to test a few product scenarios specifically for me, which would ultimately determine whether or not I purchased a specific product (which is only available from with free shipping from Amazon Canada for TWICE the price it is offered anywhere else, so worth buying from the US and paying the shipping). Now, I can’t buy that guy a beer or get lunch for him some day, but I feel it is important to let him know that his efforts are appreciated. Karma is really the only option available. He saved me countless hours of frustration and a few dollars as well, and a token of my gratitude was required.

I believe that those members with a multitude of posts feel that they are helping others because that is what the purpose of these forums is and it doesn’t need to tallied since what they have done to better the community is just ‘all in a days work’. Maybe so, but some of us feel indebted to those people who have probably saved many-a-Vera from being unplugged and hurdled toward the nearest wall out of sheer frustration or anger.

As far as -Karma goes, well, it happens, we’re all human. You will never satisfy 100% of the people 100% of the time.
