Anybody know if this will work with Vera?
I would think that Vera would see it similar to the micro smart energy switches.
I have been wanting a way to control and monitor my electric water heater and this would be perfect.

Likewise. Got my water heater on a Timeguard timer now - where’s the automation in that!!
While I feel that Vera should support it, I haven’t tested it and don’t know if it does.
I do know that the Intermatic CA3750 InTouch Wireless Multi-Volt 120-277VAC Contactor Module works great for controlling water heaters with Vera. However, it does not have energy metering.
I just ordered 2 off Amazon.
It doesn’t mention, but it seems to support two load lines to support 220v (to monitor my AC and Dryer). Yeah!

Will let you know…
Even if it supports two load lines the amps are probably not enough

It supports 50 amps. However, I’m unsure and will leave it to my electrician.
The Aeon Labs Aeotec ZW078-ZWUS Z-Wave Heavy Duty Smart Energy Switch is rated for 240VAC and up to 40Amps(9600 watts resistive).
The average residential electric water heater(40-50 gallon) will use between 4500 and 5500 watts max. This switch should have no problem switching such a water heater. Again, I have yet to test this switch.
Whole house tankless water heaters can draw significantly more current. I’ve seen 36Kw units that require 150 amps. But, I don’t see the point of putting such an on-demand unit on a switch. If the goal was energy monitoring, then clamp type meters like the Aeon Labs Aeotec Z-Wave Smart Energy Meter would be the appropriate method.
I’m very interested in this one. I would love to hook this up to my well pump and then have my water sensors around the house shut off the pump if a leak is detected. Anyone have any luck with this guy and vera?
I’ve purchased one for my sprinkler pump. Though I can get Veralite to recognize the device and include it, it doesn’t control the device. At first I thought it was because it was outside but even when I bring the vera device to it, it still won’t turn on or off. I also wanted to mentioned that the unit also has a temperature widget which give me the upto date outside temperature.
I’m going to be contacting Aeotec to see if they can help get this fixed. I’ll let you know.

Any updates on this? I’d like to use this to monitor energy usage of specific 240V devices.
I purchased one of these for my water heater. I was able to get it to pair with Vera and I’m able to control the on/off function. However, the temperature and energy monitoring don’t seem to be recognized fully. Vera does seem to see that there should be a temp sensor since it created a device for it, but there is no device for the power meter created (this is the first z-wave device I’ve gotten that has the power meter function so I’m not entirely sure how this usually shows up in Vera).
It also seems to be failing to fully configure since it keeps saying “Failed at: Please wait! Getting the manufacturer”.
But, at the least I am able to control the on/off function so the main purpose I got this can be fulfilled.

have you tried to contact vera support? I am interested in getting this set up, but i want it mostly for the wattage reporting.

I got this resolved by purchasing a zwave extender. The minute I paired it my Seinfeld device works like a charm and I can monitor the energy used.
Hi,
We recently finished testing this device and came up with a couple of ways of getting it working in VERA UI5.
More details at http://www.vesternet.com/resources/application-notes/apnt-89
Hope that helps!

Can you verify that link? It redirects me to your homepage and when I browse your resource area I cannot find it. Is it possible that it has not yet been published and is in some sort of draft state?
Nevermind, don’t know what happened the first time, but it seems to be working now that I tried it again.
Thanks
ok this is strange. Somehow this seems to have fixed itself. I am now able to control, see energy use, and see the temp. It appears to be fully working now. The only thing I can think of is that I added a few new devices yesterday and somehow doing this kicked something in the vera to cause this to work.
Sorry I forgot to mention this in my previous posts, but I’m using UI7 on a Veralite.
This sounds similar to what knarf057 was saying with the range extender.
It seems to me that Vera has issues talking directly to the ZW078, but when it’s routing through another non-gen5 (z-wave+) device it works fine.
Is there anyway to see the routing Vera is using to talk to a specific device? Sorry I’m still new to z-wave.

Yes, if it’s routed via another device that doesn’t support the Security Encapsulation Z-Wave Command Classes then it would work.
But this may prove intermittent for example if at some point the device comes back into direct range or the route via the intermediate devices stops working, causing Vera to attempt direct communication again.
@Martyn thank you very much for posting this working around!

Hoewever, if this is the case, you could use a manual route to make sure Vera never does that.
Just gotone. Can anyone share there install directions for a 240v water heater? Ive got 3 wires. 2 hot and 1 ground. In the directions it shows 4 wires. I dont have a neutral wire so i assume that is not required for 240v?
