A quick question about z wave and z wave plus

We have a V3 and a V+…separate networks. The V3 devices are (obviously) z wave gen 3. The V+ is all gen 5 except for one light switch. I have seen oblique comments online that if there’s a gen 3 device on a gen 5 network, all traffic falls back to gen 3. I don’t see how this can be the case, as at least one sensor on the V+ network seems to understand nothing but gen 5…I could never get it to pair with the V3. But if having the gen 3 dimmer on the network is hampering gen 5 capabiltiies, it can easily be replaced.

Thanks in advance, sorry if this is a dumb question.

Hi Richard,

The controller will talk gen 5 to all gen 5 devices and gen 3 to the one other. There is one exception. If the traffic is routed via the gen 3 device to reach a gen 5, it will be gen 3. So no problem using an older device, just as long as it is not one of the few that can route, i.e. is on power rather than battery.

Cheers Rene
